Daughter #2 arrived in Tokyo Japan this morning, but she is supposed to go to Kumamoto tomorrow. They were hit with 28 inches of rain in 24 hours and at 18 people are dead. We emailed her host family and are waiting to see if they are ok. Any news? |

Daughter #2 arrived in Tokyo Japan this morning, but she is supposed to go to Kumamoto tomorrow. They were hit with 28 inches of rain in 24 hours and at 18 people are dead. We emailed her host family and are waiting to see if they are ok. That is an insane ammount of rain! Ernesto... yes you are crazy. But the world needs people like you. Keep it up, it is inspiring. It's 4am on Saturday already here and I'm going to ride to Main Beach to do 5k Parkrun race. It's been a rainy week here (but not like in Tokyo), hopefully I don't get drenched on the bike, not fun. Rachel... feeling any better? ---------- P.S. Just got back from the 5k run/race (24':something on the muddy trail). Great run and opportunity to meet interesting people. And free! Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife got to fb with the host father. He said they are OK and the airport is open. My daughter is scheduled to fly out of Tokyo at 2:00 AM est. We are holding our breath until she lands at 4:00 AM est. My wife also got to fb oldest daughter in Guatemala. She is doing well and is looking forward to moving to the capital next week. She said zacapa is deadly hot! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() - Jim, glad to hear that things are going to be Ok with your daughter in Kumamoto, and yes, certain parts of Guatemala have been hot (but nothing like some parts of the US) - Rachel, hope you are recovering well and keep us posted on what you decide to do with the IM. - Ernesto, 3 IM's is totally awesome. We really need your tips on how to improve the approval process at home - Jackie, good to hear from you and hope things are getting a better on your side (sending lots of positive vibes your way!) - On my side, Gabe Jr. and mom are doing well and I get to finally bring them home from the hospital tomorrow Training wise I have to say sorry but no surprises here. Yesterday I was not able to get any workouts done between multiple trips to the hospital and the office and then going out to celebrate the arrival of Gabe Jr. with some friends until late at night. Today a 50 min drainer workout with a nice hangover

Need to leave the house today early to visit my kids who have been away at camp for the last 3 weeks. T-storms outside made the treadmill my only option. Interesting to see how much lower my HR was when not in heat and conditions. Makes me pine for the fall running season on the East Coast.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seems like I missed a lot in being away for a week. Congrats Gabe on your new one! Charlotte - glad to hear the good news on your son. Rachel - get better soon! I accidentally hit the Garmin start button yesterday morning before returning from our 1st full family vacation since 2009. It made for an interesting exercise file (one heckuva an open water swim - LOL): http://connect.garmin.com/activity/199083488 I did manage to get a lot of swimming (for me) in during the week we spent in the Caicos. Found I really enjoy swimming in the open ocean. Much more peaceful, relaxing, etc. Managed to get one good file from a swim: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/199083516 Updating totals for last week - I'd love to go jump on the trainer right now but wife would shoot me with the amount of work that needs to be done cleaning up from vacation. If anyone is thinking of traveling to the Turks and Caicos I am open to discuss. We all had a great time. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Added yesterday's swim and today's Bike/Swim/Run/Bike brick. It's just too darn hot to run outside, so a good excuse to do an easy ride over to the Y for a swim and treadmill run then bike home. I miss those 40 degree days! Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, the decision has been made. For better or worse, at 7am tomorrow, Swiss time, I will be lining up on the start line for Ironman Zurich. I had a test swim this morning and although I don't have as much strength as I'd like there wasn't that much pain in my shoulder. It's now only certain movements that hurt and actually the swim ones aren't generally too bad. I've accepted the fact that I'm going to have a slower than expected swim, and I'm reminding myself repeatedly that I have to do the rest of the race the same way I had planned and not feel I have to "make up" the time. If you want to follow my progress my bib no is 1684. Kevin is 1686. |

![]() | ![]() So not only is it hot up here in Minnesota (and cold in the winter) we have to put with OTTER ATTACKS! The woman who taught my bike class, a pro biker and triathlete, was ATTACKED BY AN OTTER during an open water swim here. Did I mention she was ATTACKED BY AN OTTER!!!! Of course, it made the news. Here's the video http://kstp.com/article/stories/s2689447.shtml |

![]() ![]() |
![]() | ![]() I would assume so. She has something like 28 puncture wounds, some of them very deep. But rabies shots aren't what they used to be. My wife got them as a kid (bit by a ferrel cat they never found) and they were like 10 shots with a huge needle in the stomach area. My middle daughter was bit about five years ago (again by a ferrel cat they never found) and she needed only three (maybe five, but I think it was three) shots in the arm. |

Just don't waste any more energy on it than absolutely necessary. All the best, go slow, eat and drink well and enjoy the show!!! Edited by markz 2012-07-14 8:04 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rachel and Kevin completed the IM Switzerland swim (1:30:03 and 1:34:10 respectively)! Good on you guys! Edited by markz 2012-07-15 2:58 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good news: at 35km Rachel and Kevin seem to be riding together... there's only 10sec between them. This is better than TdF! |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() At 63km point they are powering along, probably uphill, the pace dropped noticably, Rachel ahead of Kevin by less than 2min. The next section of the course will be faster, judjung by the pace of the leader Kueng. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() At km 85 Rachel is 11min ahead and going strong averaging 27.81 km/h. |
