I am feeling much better today, bronchitis seems to be a thing of the past but that inhaler is not far from me (yet). Seem to be ditching the sinus infection as well THANK GOD ! Made it to the pool today, I timed myself for the June womens triathlon, took me 11 ish minutes to do 400 so i rounded to 12 LOL. worked on as much as I could since my tri I realized I looked horrible ! A buddy of mine said she saw herself on my blog video and was like "how on earth did my arm get that high" !!! So our Rubber ducky swim club group will meet the first time tomorrow night, and I mentioned I'd seen myself swim and saw HORRIBLE mistakes ! So we will do some video of our group and maybe we can all do better with a visual of ourselves ! LOL I am not all caught up on the posts, but I've been through a few adn I'm off to the trainign logs. Hugs and thanks for the ispires you have left for me ! glad you are feeling better Julie....welcome back...we have missed our newest triathlete! |

I wanted to post last night but didn't have the chance. The swimming lessons are going REALLY well!!! The instructor (and her friend) last night pointed out that I really kick with my legs very far apart, creating drag. I tried to cut that down, and I could feel a difference right away. If I can find my therapy band, I'm going to tie my legs up to swim. Ha ha ha. She also videotaped us with her cell phone and is going to e-mail them to us. Roomie said she got hers, but not mine yet? I don't want everyone on BT seeing my huge behind, though. (Frankly, I'm glad *I* don't have to look at it. Ha ha ha!) Also this morning I had NO pain in my foot. So that's going really well as well. I really cannot stop raving about triggers points and the self-treatment of pain. This stuff is amazing. OH MY GOD ! kicking my feet too wide apart is one of the things I was told I should work on, and I do not have small behind, so if you have not seen this yet, take a look at my blog www.jdhalter.blogspot.com and you can see the video of me and my HORRIBLE form ! I used it to work on thigns today, but it was painful to look at how badly I was swimming !! HOWEVER I can use it now and try to fix what I know is wrong ! You are not alone on the wide kicky thing ! lol you just wait~ keep up the swimming eventually you will be a fishy and have the best form around!!!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Offthegrid - 2009-03-18 5:20 PM I SWAM 2,000 YARDS TODAY!!! I'm so super psyched. AND, my 100-yard warmup was 10 seconds faster than my all-out 100 last week and is 30 seconds faster than my warmup last week. On my next swim, I'm anxious to time an all-out 100. Keeping my legs closer together -- along with my breathing improvement -- has really done the trick. Next up I'll have to master flip turns. ![]() THAT IS FABULOUS SUSIE! I AM SOOO HAPPY FOR YOU!...HEY --once you master swimming you will have to give me some lessons! I just got my Terri Laughlin Swimming Made Easy book yesterday in the mail...hoping that will psyche me up for some swim enthusiasm I seem to be lacking! haha kiu! and pass some of that swim jiggy on will ya? |

I swam 40 mins Saturday and rode almost 2 hours, and I wasn't that hungry Saturday. But then on Sunday it was like I simply could not eat enough food. (In hindsight, I *should* have tracked my calories those days to make sure I ate enough Saturday, and I'm going to get better about doing that.) Does that happen to other people, too? i can't deal with the hunger so i EAT (i figure that it balances itself because i can't eat after a big workout...stomach does not want to) the problem is when you are forced to sit/rest...body thinks it is an off day/pig out day,so i am more carefull when that happens.wtg on the 2 pounds off!
I am with you Isabelle. I have to eat when I am hungry...I just try to not have unhealthy snacks in sight or in the cabinets I access often in the kitchen, and I try to keep it to small portions for dinner and for my snacks...plus LOTS AND LOTS of water! make sure you are hydrating daily. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sledge - 2009-03-19 5:37 AM Good morning everyone! I am now convinced that the way to have a great workout is to do it under adverse conditions. Last night I didn't get much sleep at all -- laid awake for two hours after I went to bed, then woke up about every 15 minutes after that. Then I had to get up very early to take my dh to the airport. I decided to try to get the track workout in that got messed up on Tuesday. After about a half mile on the track, about 200 Army EOD trainees showed up. I thought I was in for it! But we played nicely and we all get our workouts in. I usually do intervals with Torture Dan, but today I managed it alone. Not sure if I'll be able to do this every week, but it sure felt good today. wow...that sounds like a REALLY crowded track area! Good job getting in a torture session on your own! You just never cease to amaze me gal!?! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Offthegrid - 2009-03-18 7:22 PM which brings me to yet another question: How long (time) of a swimming workout warrants extra recovery food? Tonight I did buy chocolate milk because I didn't want to run into Sunday's problem... Excellent on the improvement, Susie. I can't believe how well you keep up the training with all that's going on for you. I'd find a cave and sit alone whining, if it were me! As to recovery nutrition, there's a confusing bunch of research out there about. I've looked at some of it trying to convince my sister that it's better to do long-slow to melt fat than hard-fast. A good rule of thumb (we call those rules of dumb in laboratories, btw) is to only worry about recovery nutrition when your workouts are more than 2 hours long. Your body has plenty of reserves to get you to that point. You then have 24 hours to replenish and it's best to do that with meals rather than liquids. The old 30 minute rule was from data out of U of F (gatorade country) on sports teams (football, basketball, track, etc. - not what we do!). If you're going longer than 2 hours, you should fuel as you go, of course. And that will most likely be liquids due to exercise induced vomiting issues! Swimming is special because it messes with your internal thermometer as well as the exercise part. Your brain thinks it needs to heat you up and the most efficient way to do that is to burn calories in the gut, so you get that hungry feeling. There are recent studies that show that people tend to overcompensate for calories when they swim, possibly because of the thermoregulatory issues, and actually gain weight. Be really careful about post-swimming intake - you probably didn't burn as many calories in that swim as your stomach is telling you. Eat fiber to satisfy the hunger rather than sugars (chocolate milk, for example). Then just follow your normal diet. Remember, if you're building your workouts, you should also increase your caloric intake to compensate so your body doesn't go into "starvation" mode. On the other hand, some people swear by recovery nutrition, so if it makes you feel better and doesn't make you gain weight, go for it! Trish |

I knew she would not if she never saw me do it. HOWEVER when I was in high school i was held under the water too long and was terrified of it after that. I never ran in my life (big boobs hurt even when you are young when they do the bouncy thing). So I just got a bra made of steel and started that back in October too. I have not been on a bike outside since dd was born (4 1/2 year ago).......can you imagine what I'll do wrong on that thing ? LOL Dh changed the tires and now the brakes drag........so he will have to fix that. I plan to take it to the bike shop i found who WILL work on walmart bikes, see if they can oil it up and get it ready for riding outside. dh will not wat to pay any $$ for it I can tell you that much ! lol I just wish swimming were more natural !

Thanks Julie for the invite!! Doing this tri stuff for about 5+ yrs- my eldest daughter ( age 25) got me involved by suggesting "mum - you can do this!!" and so the story goes. I'm now 49 ( will be switching age groups this yr... hmmmm... ) came form a volleyball background- after some timultuous years of recovering from kidney cancer- well here I am. Lots of scars- and lets say lots of cool stories! Anyway- technically, I am a crappy swimmer- can go forever-however lack technique... love the bike- but can always hope to go faster( we live in the flat lands in southwestern Ontrio- no hills- so plan to learn to love hills this yr!)- and a slogger on the run. Planning on 2 HIM's this yr- have a 30 km race ( ie 18 miles) planned end of this month. So - if I can hang out a bit I'd appreciate it!!

So - if I can hang out a bit I'd appreciate it!!
thanks, -Helen

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sledge - 2009-03-19 4:32 PM The problem isn't that I can't carry stuff with me when I'm running. The problem is that I choke when I try to drink, and I'm not willing to slow down and walk. Go figure! I've started practicing with gu on the bike, and also shot blocks. I haven't had any problems with either product. I'll probably stick with them for my HM. After 13 marathons, I have tried lots of combinations and snorted way too much water/gatorade/ultimax/powerade or whatever concoction they happen to be serving. With paper cups, do practice pinching to make a small spout- it does limit how much gets splashed on your face. I am a fan of both gu (Mint Choc-YUM! :P)and shot blocks too for my long runs (2h+) and have watched friends also use gummy bears, jelly beans, pretzels and other types of gels. Play around with timing- every 45 min works well for me. I am personally not a fan of bars on the run but DH keeps telling me that when I start going on longer rides and prepping for the big race, I will need to be able to take in solids. What other nutrition does everyone use for their long training days? |
