I wanted to post last night but didn't have the chance. The swimming lessons are going REALLY well!!! The instructor (and her friend) last night pointed out that I really kick with my legs very far apart, creating drag. I tried to cut that down, and I could feel a difference right away. If I can find my therapy band, I'm going to tie my legs up to swim. Ha ha ha. She also videotaped us with her cell phone and is going to e-mail them to us. Roomie said she got hers, but not mine yet? I don't want everyone on BT seeing my huge behind, though. (Frankly, I'm glad *I* don't have to look at it. Ha ha ha!) Also this morning I had NO pain in my foot. So that's going really well as well. I really cannot stop raving about triggers points and the self-treatment of pain. This stuff is amazing. OH MY GOD ! kicking my feet too wide apart is one of the things I was told I should work on, and I do not have small behind, so if you have not seen this yet, take a look at my blog www.jdhalter.blogspot.com and you can see the video of me and my HORRIBLE form ! I used it to work on thigns today, but it was painful to look at how badly I was swimming !! HOWEVER I can use it now and try to fix what I know is wrong ! You are not alone on the wide kicky thing ! lol A tip from my swim coach to try to keep the legs closer together is to point your toes inward and think about trying to get your big toes to touch as you kick. They don't have to touch but it's the thought that should get the legs closer. Good tip - but mine were far apart front to back, especially when rolling on my side ... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, everyone, BT is finally banned at work, so no more surfing while I'm on a boring conference call. My shoulder is a little tired, so I'm not going to swim tomorrow. Instead I'll go for another microjog, and then lift weights tomorow at lunchtime. I'm doing awesome with nutrition ... the chocolate milk hit the spot yesterday, and I only ate somewhere around 1,400 calories, so I think some days I might have been too low. I'll have to keep better track. I bought some dried fruit to try on Saturday's bike ride ... I can do Gu, but I can't eat 95% of the energy bars because they have gluten. Since I have moved out, I have cooked every single meal. It is SOOOO nice not to have someone dragging you to restaurants where you can't get a healthy meal all the time. Hopefully I can pick my bike up soon! |

Many people say that the best recovery drink should have a ration of carbs to protein of 4:1; chocolate milk has this ratio, and whey protein is also supposed to be particularly good. Speaking of 4:1, the Accel line of drinks and gels uses this. I have TON of drink mix, in several flavors, that I was given free by an Accel distributor. I'm not using it because it didn't really agree with me so if anyone wants to give it a try, let me know. |

They have some really fun designs though I haven't yet purchased one for myself. Perhaps I might get the one with the little alien since sometimes the water seems so alien/foreign to me....or maybe the skull and crossbones will make me 'the intimidator' in the pool....yeah right. lol Happy Friday! Just 5 hours, 48 minutes until Spring Break! Can you tell I am excited?! Mean teacher here has the kidlets writing a math test on their last day. Linkin, dh and I are headed to Fernie which is a great little ski hill which is notorious for POWDA but also for variable temps that can bring either rain or snow at this time of year. Just looking forward to getting away for a little rest and relaxation. If we can do some skiing...wonderful, otherwise sitting, sleeping and running will be just fine. Not sure about the email/internet thing so have a great weekend gang! Any racing?

I'm in southwestern Ontarion- small city- Chatham- (between London and Windsor- not to far from Detroit!) Anyway- my goal is to be able to run 22 km of the race- and 'the death march" for the remaining 8 km!! It is a hilly/tough course- I'm use to the flatlands... oh well- good trng!! Hope everyone has a great weekend- and thanks for the welcome! |

Tonight I did buy chocolate milk because I didn't want to run into Sunday's problem... Excellent on the improvement, Susie. I can't believe how well you keep up the training with all that's going on for you. I'd find a cave and sit alone whining, if it were me! As to recovery nutrition, there's a confusing bunch of research out there about. I've looked at some of it trying to convince my sister that it's better to do long-slow to melt fat than hard-fast. A good rule of thumb (we call those rules of dumb in laboratories, btw) is to only worry about recovery nutrition when your workouts are more than 2 hours long. Your body has plenty of reserves to get you to that point. You then have 24 hours to replenish and it's best to do that with meals rather than liquids. The old 30 minute rule was from data out of U of F (gatorade country) on sports teams (football, basketball, track, etc. - not what we do!). If you're going longer than 2 hours, you should fuel as you go, of course. And that will most likely be liquids due to exercise induced vomiting issues! Swimming is special because it messes with your internal thermometer as well as the exercise part. Your brain thinks it needs to heat you up and the most efficient way to do that is to burn calories in the gut, so you get that hungry feeling. There are recent studies that show that people tend to overcompensate for calories when they swim, possibly because of the thermoregulatory issues, and actually gain weight. Be really careful about post-swimming intake - you probably didn't burn as many calories in that swim as your stomach is telling you. Eat fiber to satisfy the hunger rather than sugars (chocolate milk, for example). Then just follow your normal diet. Remember, if you're building your workouts, you should also increase your caloric intake to compensate so your body doesn't go into "starvation" mode. On the other hand, some people swear by recovery nutrition, so if it makes you feel better and doesn't make you gain weight, go for it! Trish Trish, thank you so much for this info!!! I totally agree that the research is confusing. I've always felt that I can go for 2 hours without nutrition, either biking or running. But I have always had issues with hydration while I'm running, and even during a half marathon race I don't drink anything. Unfortunately now I'm training for an HM (which will take me much longer than 2 hours do you have an energy belt with the little hydration bottles? I use this for anything over 10 miles running...so in otherwords not often! haha I bought mine at Runners World but see them all over the place online. I also will use gu...it is one of the few energy substances that seem to work when I am in motion and can not chew/swallow dry and chewy power bars or cliff bars...gu seems to go down easily and they have some good flavors...others hate it! I cant imagine all the years of mtn bike racing without gu! it has saved me from MAJOR BONKING on the back side of many cross country courses and uphill races. The problem isn't that I can't carry stuff with me when I'm running. The problem is that I choke when I try to drink, and I'm not willing to slow down and walk. Go figure! I've started practicing with gu on the bike, and also shot blocks. I haven't had any problems with either product. I'll probably stick with them for my HM.
I'm still working on it - especially in triathlons. I always drink too much on the bike and slosh (and have to pee) on the run. In running races, I run to the aid station, take a cup and walk for 10-20 steps to drink it. Are you breathing hard while you're running? Maybe slow down to a recovery pace, get your breathing under control, drink and go? It's fine to suck on sharkies or shot blocks, but there's just no getting around the fact that you need those fluids! Keep trying! We'll figure it out. Trish |
