Question:

The best way to get ready for some hills in a Tri I'm doing September 4th. I need to be able to handle the hills in Clermont FL. Apparently they are no joke. Since I'm terrified of riding my bike around here, I do it once-a-week. I can do the Rickenbacker Causeway... over and over. But I'd really like to know the best way to get ready, in the shortest amount of time, for those hills. Any ideas? Without hurting my injury prone self.

Hope I didn't scare you with my comments about the Clermont hills; i don't know the course for your race, so it may not be that big of a deal - just didn't want you to be surprised that we actually have hills up here!

That said, the only way i know how to get ready for hills is to ride hills.  The more experienced riders will probably have more to offer.  Knowing the Rickenbacker Causeway the way I do now , if you can ride it on a consistent basis you shouldn't have any trouble with Clermont.

Good luck,

Ann-Marie

If you have a trainer set it with high resistance and/or go to a low gear and do some simulated hill repeats.  Low cadence 50 to 60, high power.  Start with 5 mins and work up.  They are called SEs, strength exercises.  They are like weight lifting on a bike, they exercise the exact muscles you'll need for the climbs.  Road time is necessary for bike skills, but some pro elites like Andy Potts spend most of their time on computrainers indoors because they are more efficient exercises and safer.   Regular fluid trainers work well too.   I've done ALOT of training on the CT indoors and my power is very high and speed is better than ever.  I'm going to Wisconsin tonight to ride the real hills but the trainer has really been a huge help getting me ready for the race.

I have a spin bike. I guess I can simulate climbing on it...why not?

Good Advice AMD... up and down the Rickenbacker is good too!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are all doing great! Getting your workouts done and meeting your own goals.  It's been fun "hanging out" here with you all.

With just 6 days until the IM race I thought I would post. I may not have much time after this morning. There are many little details to get done before the race.

In 2007, just before learning about TMS/PPD, I was a wreck. I couldn't type because of RSI, I couldn't run because of low back pain and plantar fasciitis. I couldn't play tennis because of tennis elbow. I couldn't do much of anything else strenuous because of the pinched nerves in my neck.

Yet, in 6 days (July 30), I'm doing an Ironman! Learning about TMS/PPD in mid-2007 changed my life.  For me, being free from the pain allowed me to discover and develop a love for endurance sports. My life would be much more limited if not for Dr. Sarno and his dedication to get the information about TMS out. I dedicate this Ironman race attempt to him.

McFuzz (Mike) is doing the same race so wish us luck!!

Best!

Enrique

Thanks for the well wishes.

I'm not nervous about the race, but I am about my bike being "checked luggage."

A "perfect" race day will have me swimming 1:15, biking 6:00, and running 4:30 (or a few minutes faster) to finish <12:00.

Realistically, 1:18 for the swim and 6:10 for the bike and an overall time of 12:15-12:30 would be a good day.

I'll take finishing the day without medical intervention!

(Let's be honest, I'll take finishing the day with medical intervention, but it might be the end of my tri-career.

Mike and Enrique,

Good luck to you both!   I hope you have a great day and  I'll be cheering you on from chi-town.

As for my latest escapades...did a 5k last Sat.   Mike you'll like this, it was part of an Eagle Project.  Scout was running this race and collecting shoes for Save our Soles.  Anyway, I ran my 2nd best 5k time ever  23:57.  Woo hoo!  Hips a bit achy after that but nothing I can't live with.  Now on to the Muddy Buddy this Sunday.  It's going to be a family affair.  My 21 yr old son and his girlfriend are a team.  I'm a team with my good friend Robin.  Her daughter is doing it with a friend and my husband and younger son are a team.  My older son has been trash talking how he is going to beat his mom.  Ha! There is going to be some hieny kicking this weekend and it won't be mine. Wink

Hah...be impressed when I hit them!

Who am I kidding, just signing up is super impressive

Nah, just takes money to sign up and stupidity to show up.  (I'm kidding about the "stupidity" part, it'd only be stupid to show up without training.

I can't wait to read the race reports.

Hopefully, the RR will be pretty boring...I showed up, raced exactly the way I planned, and walked past the medical tent.  (Read my CdA RR and you'll appreciate what I'm saying here)

Good luck Enrique and Mike I hope you guys have great races! Mike read your CdA RR and its nutz that you were able to finish that race! Man, that's commitment. Have a safe race and if you see and sandwich boards, give them wide berth. I have what I consider to be my big race of the summer next weekend. Its a large (1500) all woman Race in Philadelphia next weekend.

Hope everyone's training is going well : )

stephsprint - 2011-08-01 5:41 AM Ok, let's hear the training and race stories!

OK, here's one.

This weekend did a race called the Muddy Buddy.  An absolute hoot!  It is a bike/run partner race.  One person starts out on the bike, the other running.  At the end of each leg, which are between 1 -1.25 miles each, you switch off running and biking.  So one partner ends up running 3 legs and biking two and visa versa for the other partner.  At each transition you have to complete an obstacle.   These were scaling a wall and climbing down a rope course on the opposite side, scaling an inflatable wall (try that when you are all sweaty!)  Climbing 20 ft rope ladder and then sliding down and inflatable slide.  The entire course, bike and run was on very rough trails.  Gravel , rocks, mud, uphill, downhill.  Tough terrain.  At the very end you meet up with your partner and navigate a final obstacle. Scaling 13 foot wall using a rope, then  crawling on your belly under the ropes through the mud pit, 20 feet, then run to the finish.  What a blast!  Many people wear costumes and decorate the bike so you, your partner and bike are easily spotted.  It was a challenging race, made more challenging by the fact that it was already pretty hot and total sunshine.  The mud pit actually was refreshing!    The age groups are by combined age so my friend and I were in the women 96 and older category.  And we came in 2nd!  Missed 1st by 6 seconds.  So much fun.  Planning to do it next year.

I'll try to attach a picture.

Congratulations to you both.  That is so awesome.

I'm putting in long hours training in super hot conditions.  113 miles on the bike in a very hilly course on Saturday as part of a charity ride.  18 mph ave.  Intense ride with 3 X 15 mins at 80% on Sunday, then 1:40 run.  Feeling really dead on my butt. Week of workouts, then back to Madison on Saturday for 112 mile ride and 90 min run.
