Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed All day long - I have been thinking about going out for a bike ride. It's a beautiful day here and I am dying to go. But.... my knee started to ache and while I don't think anything is really wrong, I'm going to take the day off with the hopes of avoiding serious injury. Last year, I spent serious time on the DL and I am determined to stay healthy this year. Plus, tomorrow is my long run day and I'd hate to miss that... Tonight I'm hoping that a beer I brewed a few weeks ago is ready... Its a hoppy wheat ale... It looked like pee but tasted like gold... |

Veteran 238 New Mexico | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Ok I guess it is my turn to join all the folks with knee problems . I have slowly been getting a pain in my left knee on the front of the knee around the patella. It started out not that bad and I decided (stupid I know) to just work through it. It has gotten worse and after researching it, I am convinced that it is Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. So I have rested, rubbed, iced, etc. since Sunday and this morning there is still pain. I am tired of not cycling (riding the bike seems to irritate it more than running). Any idea on how long it takes for this to go away and when I could get back to riding. All the info I see says to rest until the pain is gone, but resting sucks! |

All the info I see says to rest until the pain is gone, but resting sucks! My rule of thumb is 2 days after it feels 100%. I would also look at your cleats / pedals / seat position / seat height, since the bike shouldn't put any significant strain on the knees. What cleat system do you use? |

Expert 1058 Fallon, Nevada | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Add me to the knee thing...Mile three the other day the knee started hurting. To help I tried adjusting my stride and land mid foot instead of on the ball of my foot. Seemed to help during the run and it has been getting better....of course I have not done any training for the past three days. |

I just have basic pedals with no cleats. I did raise the seat height a bit as I have read that that may be a factor. And the really strange thing is that when I am riding they do not hurt so much as when I am just sitting at my desk or stationary. 2 days after 100%????? but I have plans to ride and run this weekend better be 100% by tomorrow! |

Seat height is pretty standard; there should be a slight bend (from straight) in the knee at the bottom of the stroke, and some ankle flex.. It is easy to tell if it's too high, since there will be a kink in your stroke and movement in your hips - if you ride with anyone, they should spot it almost instantly. More importantly, it should feel wrong, like you're having to over-extend your leg to hit the bottom of the stroke. Since you aren't using cleats, that isn't a factor - but cleats and cleat systems have a huge variety of float options, and depending on who you are, a specific cleat may or may not work for you. My road bike runs Look-style cleats, and I use 4.5 degree cleats, which I have been happy with. My cross bike uses SPD cleats, which have about the same amount of float. As for rest, I stand by it - 2 days after 100%. Otherwise, you run the risk of re-injury, which could sideline you longer. Time to work on your stroke with some pull buoy drills |

Felt great to get outside biking! Neck...was a pain, hand numb but who cares it was fun to get out there! Had a Phillips Indian session ale and a brewsters wild horse ipa, both decent beers. Alex - it's your birthday - you can do what ever you want! It sounds like you had a great time and after all the hard work that you have out in - you DESERVE IT! Think of how far you have come and how different you are in comparison to your last birthday. Plus - you've got to take advantage of not having kids whenever you can. What type of beers did you drink? Thanks for signing up. I'm a little worried about whether they will make us active - and every post we can make in the new thread will help us. |
