I showered and scrubbed after and I still smelled like chlorine the rest of the day. Is there some trick to take care of that smell? Embrace it! It's the equivalent of cologne... My biger issue is how dry it makes my face. My wife is always reminding after a swim (before I head back to the office) to put some cream on my face so I don't look so goofy. |

Extreme Veteran 576 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed question for the group- I can borrow a set of 80mm carbon tublars for my race. As this HIM will be my last for a while do i risk using tubular and gettting a flat and being out or ride with my normal wheels and have a patches for any flats? As I'm not use to riding with tubulars will i gain that much in time over the 90kms ride? |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Matthews - 2013-04-26 4:21 AM question for the group- I can borrow a set of 80mm carbon tublars for my race. As this HIM will be my last for a while do i risk using tubular and gettting a flat and being out or ride with my normal wheels and have a patches for any flats? As I'm not use to riding with tubulars will i gain that much in time over the 90kms ride? I like tubulars more than clinchers, but I don't feel they are faster. For me it is a difference in the feel for the road. A tubular tire feels smoother and more responsive to me. I don't know if there is science to back that up. Some people argue they are faster. Ernesto will probably have a stronger opinion on that than me. Tubulars are supposed to be less likely to flatten than clinchers, but I had several flats last year. That was a none tire issue, but an idiot who takes care of our road issue. Instead of using road mix he used a foundation gravel the rock isn't as smooth and it doesn't have clay mixed in, so everyone clincher or tubular was getting flats. If you have never changed a tubular before, it will take forever. With practice and a tire tool, they can be changed as fast as a clincher. As a rule, I don't do anything new for a race, unless it is an emergency. Like breaking your rim a week before (I did that last year, and rode on borrowed wheels). I wouldn't change this close to the race. Trust your training and your practice and don't panic, or look to do something different to gain an unknown advantage. Good luck, you will do great. |

As I'm not use to riding with tubulars will i gain that much in time over the 90kms ride? I'd stay with your wheels since you know how to change flats on those IMO. I don't think it would be worth the little bit of time you would save otherwise to worry about flatting on the course. However, you could ask someone else about using the flat fix stuff in a can if that is acceptable or not. I don't know the answer to that though. |

Master 3022 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed So I finally got around to doing that thing we call swimming this week. That means I finally got to use my birthday present - the waterproof ipod shuffle. First swim the silicone covers for the ear buds were too big for my right ear and it kept falling out. Then the left year got water in it and I could hear muffled bass sounds. Switched out covers with another set of ear buds I have - more conical shaped silicone thingys and tried it for todays swim. Once I got them in the ear far enough I was good to go. Don't notice the shuffle at all on the goggle straps and it was nice to have music as I swam.

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed I have been having IPOD issues, so I grabbed my wife's IPOD for todays run. She hasn't downloaded my run list on her IPOD (go figure). I put it on a playlist called downloaded songs and let it go to shuffle. Which is a list of every song our family has ever downloaded. My son was 4 the first time an IPOD entered our house he is 12 now. The result was the most bazar set ever. It had everything from old rock and metal to the backyardigans, I wasn't sure if I was a middle aged redneck with a drinking problem or a 12 year old girl wishing I was Hanna Montana. I won't even go into the suggestion I got from Kid Rock. I am sure it didn't help my pacing, but It was entertaining to go from Weird Al signing about medical malpractice to hearing from eminem about life on 8 mile. Yeah, next time pick up the trash afterwards, after you win this thing... Had a relatively good weekend, 33k run on Saturday in perfect weather and a trail MTB ride this morning that ended with breaking the chain on a climb. Yesterday decided to put the old chain back on since the new one was skipping on the rear cassette and instead of using the proper connecting link, just put the old pin back. I know... stupid. It worked for 16k, but standing on pedals did it. Fortunately didn't lose the pin, forced it back in and very gently rode back pushing the bike on all the hills. It fell apart 5 more times... My hands were totally black. This was not fun.

Veteran 112 Wollongong | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Hi Guys, back again. Been a very interesting last month but I've still been swimming, riding, running and racing. But with a crazy work and having to reapply for my job as part of a 'restructure' my social cyberspace was the thing that dropped off. Looks like the northern hemisphere people are getting into their tri season and Mark is just playing at getting his hands dirty. Looking forward to getting back into the conversations Greg Edited by Gla56 2013-04-28 5:40 AM |

Complately laid me out yesterday and missed a swim and a run. Today was a scheduled rest day and back on the bike for 70 minutes tomorrow morning. Then a run and swimming on Wed. How's everyone's training going? |

Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed I had a big weekend. 3 hour ride Friday night, hour run sat followed by 35 minute bike, than another hour run. Sunday 4:35 on the bike and then 50 minute run. The 4:35 on the bike was pretty painful the last hour. My right knee was starting to bother me quite a bit, quads were hurting pretty well and I was thinking that I was going to be miserable on the run. Got off the bike, taped my foot (plantar fascitis), and headed out. The run felt really great and I held back watching my HR closely so I didn't run too fast. I felt like I had a bunch of energy. On my Friday ride I used perpetuem on the ride along with energy blasts. Towards the end my stomach wasn't feeling as great as it should have. On Sunday I skipped perpetuem and just used energy blasts and powerbar performance bars, along with 24oz of gatorade. I felt great with no stomach issues. So my question is should I just use water on the course and eat solid foods totally skipping any liquid nutrition? This coming weekend I'm planning on using some perform since that will be on course but I'm not sure how well that will sit. I'm not saying I can't handle the perpetuem but I just felt so much better without it where last year it worked pretty well for me. |

Member 146 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Marathon coming up in 3 weeks. Did my last long run yesterday before taper. 20 miles and I left pretty good. This week is probably the most running miles I've ever done in a week (34) plus biking and swimming workouts. Still have fluid on my knee but it doesn't bother me at all when running, swimming or biking. Only time is when I have to put it pressure on it such as wrestling with the kids. Hoping for a sub 3:25:00 marathon to qualify for Boston but more likely around 3:45 and I'll still be happy considering my best time is 4:42 on an injured hip and pulled calf muscle 2 miles into my last marathon. trisuppo - 2013-04-29 9:23 AM I was off to a good start on my 20 Week HIM plan, thought I had seasonal allergy issues on Saturday morning, turned out to be another head cold. I've been dealing with minor Plantar Fascitis in my right foot. never hinders my running, little soreness at start, but next day heel and arch are sore. I've been icing and stretching (though nor enough) and have recently changed insoles in my running shoes and that seems to be helping. Looking for any other treatments. |
