Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I managed to get myself on a ride today. My leg were pretty thrashed from lifting weights yesterday, but I seemed to get going around the 30 minute mark. My stupid Polar speedometer is *still* not working. GRR! So not sure how far I rode. But I went for 70 minutes. It was windy and cold, though. Supposed to be warmer tomorrow. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went to a couple more consignment shops today, but I'm giving up on that. The pants are priced at $15 but you can buy them new for $20. And very few dress pants. But I did have to buy one pair merely because they were a Size 10. I love vanity sizing. Ha ha ha. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh, and I tend to mash. I try to keep the cadence above 80, but I constantly have to remind myself to switch to easier gears. This is bad because the higher the cadence, the more you are using your cardio system and not relying on the strength of your leg muscles. |

Read some Bicycling magazine. :) Granny gear means the easiest gear ... so called because hard-core roadies wouldn't be caught dead using it. And I generally do 30-40% of my ride in the granny gear. Ha ha ha. A triple means there are three cogs in the front instead of two, so that you have easier gears for climbing. If it's at all hilly in your area, you probably want to start out with a triple. A "compact" means there are only two gears in the front, but they are easier than a true "double" but still harder than a triple. Any more questions, just ask us!MDHillSlug - 2009-03-20 11:00 PM NoSit - 2009-03-20 10:14 PM MDHillSlug - 2009-03-20 8:52 PM Congratulations! We're looking forward to hearing about the first ride! Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I ordered my compact cranks and should (hopefully) have them by the middle of the week. I also hope to have new bar tape in a day or two. I'm gonna ride the new bike on the trainer stand tomorrow while I tweak the cockpit. I'll take her out on the road next weekend, after I get the new cranks installed. Hopefully I can do it myself without screwing anything up. |

OK, we need to find out where you are and take it from there. Do you know about shifting gears? Low gears for climbing and high gears for speed? Cadence is pedal revolutions per minute, basically how fast you are turning the cranks (cranks are the arms that the pedals attach to). Mashing basically means standing up on the pedals when the bike is in a higher gear, usually at a lower cadence, whereas spinning refers to staying seated, using lower gears, and pedaling at a higher cadence. People are usually much more comfortable mashing or spinning. Oh that is so easy, I am NOWHERE ! (Well I know more now that you took time to teach me) ! I know that you get on a bike, and pedal/steer........I also know if there is a flat tire then you do not get on. Get someone else to fix it, then repeat above. I know nothing about changing tires/oiling/maintenance............and let's not forget I'll be riding a mountain bike that now has new thinner tires, I have no idea how many gears, and handle bar handles I bet will hurt my hands like hell !.......... I should have it back Tuesday from a tune up. He said he will true the wheels......basically take it apart and make it like new. I had to ask him what he meant. It's embarrassing, but I always tell anyone who I speak to "I am new....VERY new"........ and then they talk more on my level ! lol |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HOLY TOLEDO, IRONMAN, I SWAM A 100 FREE IN LESS THAN 2 MINUTES TODAY!!! OMG!!!!!!! Seriously. I'm so psyched. (And that was with doing really poor technique open turns.) And my warmup 100 time was 2:10 - it was 2:45 just two weeks ago. And I did a 500 free in 11:30 or something, so if I counted right, that's like a 2 minute improvement in just two weeks. I love teenage YMCA swim instructors! (I hope that doesn't get me in trouble. Ha ha ha.) And my plantar fasciitis seems almost healed. I keep working the Trigger Points a couple of times a day, and it's tough to find some of them any more. I've rocked my nutrition all weekend. As we speak, I'm cooking salmon and yams to fuel my bike ride this afternoon. (And a coffee, no one's perfect.) Life is looking really good these days. |

In hindsight, I have to wonder if the previous coaches had "fat bias" that made them ignore my technique and just say I need to swim more.) |
