tahrens - 2011-02-09 3:00 PM Recovery for me is a Recoverite shake from Hammer and lots of stretching and my compression socks.  For those of you who use Epsom salt baths, how much salt do you put in the tub?  I've been told half to the whole bag.  Is that right?   How full do you make the tub?

Linda, great news on the return to running.  Funny you mention your toes, when I start back running after a layoff that is what hurts the most for me as well.

Day 2 of starting to feel human again.  I haven't taken any meds today b/c I feel like I've poisoned my liver over the past week, but I realize how much better I felt while on them.  Good thing no one is in the house with me, when I get up to walk across the room I am doubled over in massive coughing fits.  Too bad it's too cold to open some windows, this place needs a serious decontamination!!!

Tracy - what kind of compression socks do you wear?  After how long a run do you wear them.

Who else wears compression socks or calf sleeves?  What brands do you like?  I will do my first marathon this year and have considered getting a pair of the sleeves for after longer runs so any inputs are appreciated.

Oh, and...

1,000 posts!

If not for this MG and all of its useful (usually) banter, I would probably still be back at 300 or so.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Who's the new guy?

I had a pair of 2xu sleeves, but lost one. They were okay.
Bought a pair of CEP socks in the summer. I like them, but I bought black, and with hardwood floors and 3 chicks in the house--- They get covered in girl hair!!
I bought a pair of ZOOT calf sleeves  ---- I love them!!! Best of the three. I like the fact that you can wear them whenever. Put them on for longer events and wear them under the wetsuit if you want.

Hi Kids!!

George-- a contrast shower is when you alternate hot and cold water to try to increase the blood flow into the legs.  Not as effective an ice bath IMO, but better than nothing.  I seem to need an ice bath more after a long run. The distance doesn't really dictate when I do these things as much as the effort and how I feel afterwards.  As far as recovery beverages go, I usually do them after 2 hours on the run and 3 hours on the bike (similar to Kyla).

Tracy--I do't use science with the Epsom Salts.  I just dump in a bunch, maybe a third of a big bag.  Same for the baking soda.  I buy both at Sam's so they are big bags.  I fill the water up high enough so the top of my quads are covered.

I forgot that I often wear my SKINS recovery tights after a hard workout.  It's been so long since I've had one that it slipped my mind.  Hope to bring those bad boys out again in the coming weeks.  I also have Sugoi, CEP and Zoot socks.  My favs are the Sugois by far.  Typically wear them only for workouts.

It is funny that you asked the recovery questions, I was going to ask this same question to the group.

I just has my first "long run"; as an ex football guy, I never thought of running for 1:15 STRAIGHT!!!

Now my calves are terribly tight and my quads don't want to fire when I walk. HELP!!! Ice bath is not an option and I don't have compression sleeves. Any other recommendations, I have a swim and long bike workout tomorrow.

Appreciate the feedback!

Nice job on the run!  Why no ice bath? You're not being a weenie, right?   It would do a world of good.  If you truly can't do the bath or even cold shower, I would suggest using your foam roller.  And God Forbid if you don't have one of those, use manual massage both crosswise and downward strokes.  Follow it up with stretching.

And them make yourself a list of crap you need to go buy!

SSMinnow - 2011-02-09 11:26 PM I'm a little late to the party today, but wanted to pop in to find out WHO'S RACING THIS WEEKEND? Details!!

For the rest of us sideliners, give us a glimpse into your planned recovery strategy after those long runs or rides....be specific!  We'll all be there soon enough.

I'm racing on Sat. 1.5k swim / 10k run.  I'm still a bit under the weather, so we'll see what kind of effort I'll be able to put in this w/e.  This race is more to get OWS experience under my belt.

After a long run/ride, I down a huge glass of chocolate milk.  Then I'm on daddy duty, so my recovery is running after Emma for the rest of the day.

I'm not a believer of compression wear.  I have a pair of 2XU tights, but I really don't "feel" the difference as a recovery aid.

However, I've never tried them while working out. It's just to hot out here to have more layers than not.

LOL - nothing like coming home after a tough workout and jumping right back into parent duty.  I swear it can be the best recovery sometimes.  After the Disney races, I literally walked around the parks on Mon/Tues for eight hours plus.  I felt great (except for the flu) by Weds. and ready to run by Friday.  It was my best recovery from a marathon ever!

But I do the usual things listed here - ice baths, compression gear, protein smoothie or choc milk.  The only other thing is throwing my legs up on the wall.  We talked about that stretch/yoga pose that mentor group and it is awesome!

Good luck Kim and all the other runners and swimmers competing this weekened.  Have fun!

Linda enjoy your girl's ski trip.  Sounds like fun!

Tony and I actually have a nice weekend planned.  Tonight we are seeing Hood to Coast.  Then after my son's birthday party on Sat.  (Laser Tag), the kids will go home w/ the grandparents for the night.  Woo Hoo!  We have a friend's birthday party to go to and then a glorious quiet (except for a barking puppy) Sunday morning.  It will be our nice valentine's Day celebration.  Funny how certain holidays can lose importance - my son was born on Valentine's Day 7 years ago and ever since that day and Feb. 14 has a whole new meaning.  Besides every day w/ Tony is like Valentine's Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Kiss

So an early wish for all the lovebirds out there to enjoy the weekend and Valentine's Day w/ your special someone.

LOL, another thing I forgot that we do.  We bought "The Stick" a couple of years ago, it actually works pretty well, when there are muscle issues it hurts to use it, then as you keep rolling it the pain goes away and legs end up feeling a bit better.

Or buy the big foam roller for $15 or so. That works good as well!

HAHA yes, I take 5 or 6 posts to answer one question, how do you think I am over 7k posts?

Did my FTP test, not sure if it was good or not.  About 20-25 watts off my 5 minute and 20 minute averages from the last one  done in the middle of the summer, when I'm in good shape.

Off the bike for a month and off and on sick.

After my 5 minute test, I think Sam thought I was having a seizure or something.  It really kicked up a bronchitis type cough, which I'm still feeling today.

Not sure if you ever got your 310 figured out working indoors, not the same problem but maybe there are indoor issues with some of the 310's, maybe you got a bad one?

Food Trucks are a trendy way in big cities to get food from mobile trucks.  Here's a list of the DC trucks so if you are ever in town check them out.  I've gone to a handful and loved everything so far - curry, lobster rolls, yummy little cupcakes, tacos and today the most delicious grilled sandwich!

Cool!

Horseheads, NY does not = Big City!!!  So I guess I won't see these pulling in anytime soon.  I do make frequent trips to Philly for Jeremy's doctors so maybe I can find some there.

Tony--I read the post--thanks for sharing it.  I think there is something wrong with the unit.  I need to send a note to Garmin and then I am sure I will hear back from them within the year.  She said snidely....

George--don't feel bad.  I had no idea what the food truck revolution was either.  We have little food wagons down on campus with some really crazy foreign food, but that's it.  I don't try them.

The next time you all hear from me I will be back in Mad Town experiencing all that WI has to offer.  I figure today's shorts run was my last for some time unless I'm on the TM!  Ah well, it's been a great two weeks in Paradise.

PS. To the racers, best of luck and report back your stellar results.  We'll be waiting!
