suzimmer - 2011-08-19 6:01 PM In preparation for Hood to Coast, running buddies and I are doing our long run tonight, after dark. (Will be wearing our blinking vests and head lamps)  My friend's husband said we sure know how to have fun on a Friday night.

Staying out/up late on a Friday night is a distant memory! It's always a bit sad to be out running on a Saturday morning when people are still coming home from their festivities!

I always get a kick out of seeing people stumbling down the street in the morning after a night of clubbing or whatever. I put in my time playing that way, now I'm glad its someone else, not this old body waking up with massive soul crushing hangovers.

We have 5:45 workouts 5 days a week, so here in Miami I always see a few 'leftovers' as the bars close at 4:00.

Big weekend.  Swimming in MOWS 1.2 miles on the IM course, then riding the bike course with one loop, 70 miles, then a short run. Then home for a long ride Sunday.  Taper starts next week.  I think the swim with the bike and run brick will really settle me down.  I can do this.  I feel strong. It's all up to execution race day - no bike problems and fueling.  I have a good race strategy thanks to my coach, input from here and a chalk talk I bought for IM Moo from Endurance nation.  Although the guy who talks you through the courses is kind of a pain, the information is good and helped me get a strategy in my head.  Swim moderate, bike moderate and steady, using all the gears and not standing up, and run stupid easy for 6 miles.  I did that last on my 15 mile run this week and I was doing negative splits at 15 miles.  Legs were sore but I was still moving well at a sub 5 hour marathon pace.  I'll take 6 after the 112 bike course believe me.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi everyone, just checking in to say hi. Everyone around here is talking about the Hurricane. Its the first time ever in NYC that they're talking about shutting the entire mass transit system down and they already have clled for an evacuation of old folks and infirm out of lower Manhattan, my feeling it they are playing it really safe. If Irene isn't as big as expected I know a lot of people who are going to be really pissed off! On the other hand, I hope Irene isnt as big a deal as expected.

I find all this new weather (August in NY is now monsoon season) more then a little depressing.

Trust me, it's better to be angry about all the hype then to have a Cat 3 or higher hurricane come through.  Even smaller hurricanes can cause a lot of damage; especially if they are slow movers.  Stay safe.

Thanks Ann-Marie, we will absolutely stay safe. A cat 3 storm would be terrible, I think its not nearly that big, its meant to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hits Manhattan -see that just sounds so weird and wrong... tropical storm and Manhattan in the same sentence. I'm prepping for it by buying water and going on a long run (because I'll likely be indoors for a couple of days)

Corncub, also get some batteries for flash light and some non electric games. I was living in Miami in 2004 and we were out of electric for 2 1/2 weeks after one of the storms. It was very hard to keep the kids entertained with no TV, also laundry was a challenge.

Hope you ride the storm just fine.

Good Luck

I did a warrior dash race today and it was a blast....

3 miles with the obstacles took me 46 minutes. Now trying to convince a friend from college that lives in NY to meet 1/2 way and go for the warrior in VA in Oct.

Did not do the Miami speed relay today. Was unsure about the 1/2 mile swim. I know...I'm a wimp. I was to swim, my friend to bike and my spouse to run. I didn't want to give them a slow start. I really need to get over that kind of thinking.

That's too bad, I'm sure you would have enjoyed yourself.  I sometimes do marathon relays with one of my SILs.  The other relay members and I know that she is much slower than we are, but that's ok.  If we were concerned about it we would not ask her to participate.  It's all for fun and we all do the best we can for our individual legs.  So next time, relax and enjoy yourself!

I'm doing a half marathon on Sunday down at Disneyland! And I get to relive my childhood love of the park and share with my little sons. Hoping to beat my previous best of 1:46:02 in March. I think I can considering that this course is flatter and I've been training a lot since then.
