Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris got me by 17 minutes. Great race out there Chris, that run was super tough in the heat and blazing sun. I'm happy to report I took 59 minutes off my last HIM time, finished today in 6:10:19. I'll post more when I get home, I'm at Panera now enjoying salty Chicken soup and sourdough. Yum. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today's race, it seems somehow the timing got screwy, it gave me a swim time that was way longer than what I actually did, then a 1 minute 0 seconds flat T1 time, then it didn't give me a swim rank for my age group and overall. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 4 mile run 30:10. We had a new arrival at our home today. Our exchange student from Japan arrived for a 1 month language program through 4h. Daughter #2 met him last week in Japan and she said he was very nice. He loves swimming, biking, running and baseball, so he found the right family. Gabe- Daughter #1 is in the capital now. She has your contact info. Our friend in the city was able to get time off, so they are doing some adventure stuff. Chris and Andy, good races. Congratulations! ![]() | ![]() Race report up. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... One thing somewhat unusual. I have about 6 yellow jacket stings (I think actually more, but it is hard to tell.) 1st on my calf when I first brought my bike into transition to setup. All the rest from a single one (that is now rotting in HELL!) that got stuck in my tri top on the bike leg. I finally was able to crush him through the top and get him out. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris and Andy - Great jobs. Chris - enjoyed your RR. Your comment about biking is something I realized quickly after finishing my first HIM. At longer distances, you really can't overtrain on the bike. Time spent in the saddle will make all the difference going forward and will set you up for your stength - the run. Catching up for the weekend runs at the Jersey Shore. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris and Andy - great races. Sucks about the yellow jacket. I got stung yesterday while mowing the lawn and moving a teeter totter - I'm still pissed about it. I can't imagine how pissed you were when it happened 6+ times during a race. Made it to the track this morning. First attempt at running since June 3rd and first atempt at what could be approximated as running by Maffetone's philosophy. Pfitzinger plan had me warm up with 10 minutes walking followed by 5 running, 5 walking, 5 running and 5 walking. Goal of workout was to see how leg responded to stress of running. Walking breaks in middle of running was to allow me an opportunity to slow down and see if there was pain present. Goal HR was 140. I did a bit better on the second interval. First interval I started too fast and had trouble bringing HR down. I felt some tenderness in the tendon but no pain or soreness in the spot where the stress fracture was/is. Walking fine with no pain after run. I need to do better at doing my strength and flexibility exercises for my tendon. I run again on Thursday and hope to swim today. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/202233657 Andy S 12/ B 6/ R 10 Rest 6 Total 28 Time 21:20:51 Edited by dangremond 2012-07-23 8:05 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm on vacation in upstate NY. Very limited internet and phone. I raced last Sunday in the Couples Tri. My teammate and I took 3rd in the Friends Over 99 division. They add the ages together. I'll eventually get a race report done. I'll also get my July data updated. Chris and Andy, congrats on your races. Chris, need to pick your brain on your nutrition. My first HIM is Sep 30. Need to get my butt in gear when I get back to Texas. Mitch, glad you got medical clearance! Edited by jackiep 2012-07-23 8:43 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris and Andy, Great races. I love my LBS (Racer's Edge in Boca Raton, FL). Brought the aerobars that Ernesto send me (thanks again, a million times). They installed them and then spent about 1 hr getting fit (retul); needed a new seat post (expected) and wanted a new saddle. Total charge for the fitting = 0. Not bad considering I did not buy the aerobars from them. Regarding the saddle, I mentioned to him the ISM and Cobb; he suggested I tried the Profile Design Tri-strike saddle first. Significantly less expensive and he said he gets the same positive reviews from his customers as with the other saddles. I always have the option of trading up if I don't like it. Although it weights more (not worried about that at this stage of my cycling prowess), since its a full saddle it might be a better option until I get fully comfortable on aero position. All in all a great experience. Of course I was VERY eager to give thema test run, and today I wake up to pouring rain. ARGGHH! Maybe tomorrow... Edited by Samyg 2012-07-23 9:36 AM |

Always good to have a solid LBS, but bear in mind that a true Retul fit usually takes several hours. Did they do baseline measurements of your body, movements, flexibility? These, along with specific bike measurements, are key data elements which need to be keyed in before the computerized analysis can be conducted. You don't need all the Retul bells and whistles for a proper bike fit. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Swim at lunch. Found out instead of giving me my money back the race company for the race I ditched in June (due to injury) moved my entry to their Sept race. I was signed up for the sprint. Had planned on doing Oly in the fall. Should I go for the Oly? My hesitancy is on my leg. I imagine I can wait a few weeks to see how the running goes. I'd also have to ramp up my swimming. Thoughts? Andy S 12/ B 6/ R 10 Rest 6 Total 28 Time 21:20:51

I know it wasn't a full retul session, but still nice that they took the time for something I didn't buy there. And besides, if I get a full retul session and my bike fit is perfect, what excuse am I going to have for my poor biking? |

Mitch- Are you coming to Tawas, or are you doing one of the other ones? Doing the Championship race at Belle Isle. If I can get my Admiral's approval (my lovely wife) I am thinking of looking for Tawas to be my first HIM next year. I think I should have enough time in my schedule next year to train adequately for a HIM. |

![]() | ![]() What walks down the hallway and goes "Ow, Ow, Ow, Ow, Ow"? Answer: Me. Not able to walk well today. Calves hurt a whole lot and quads hurt too. Took an ice bath yesterday. Should I take another one tonight? Am foam rolling the calves right now. I looked at some statistics of my race. I only looked at 45 - 54 year olds. What I noticed was that there was not very much relation between age and time. The big relationship was the number of participants and age. After 50, the number of participants drops like a rock. Age # 45 14 46 6 47 9 48 7 49 8 50 8 51 3 52 3 53 2 54 2 |

![]() Congratulations Chris and Andy!! i have been observing same decrease in participants since i turned 50 in 2007. it is one of the factors that continues to motivate me. i dream that perhaps someday, if i keep training and with major help of our longevity genes, i will be able to be on the podium at the senior olympics or Age Group Nationals. For women over 50, the decline is even more marked than for men. however, in the 2 races i have done this year, I have noticed an increase in my 55-59 age group. last year in 2 races, i won my 50-54 age group and this year in the same 2 races, same courses, i came in 3rd in 55-59 age group. One race was sprint tri and one was state TT championships. i had PRs in both this year, but the number of competitors increased compared to last year. So , the decline over 50 and even more so over 60 is still very obvious, but due to increase in participants this year, i wonder if other women in 55-59 age group have realized that with a little effort they too could be on the podium. Would that not be great !!?? |
