Yesterday and today were the first two bike commutes to work of 2013.  13 hilly miles each way, on light- to medium-traffic roads.  Yesterday was a little difficult, but this morning felt better.  It cranks my metabolism way up so even if I eat a normal breakfast I'm starving by about 11:00.

One thing I'm going to think about is how to incorporate some intervals into the ride safely.  I think just doing the ride a few times a week is good, but working in some intervals somehow would help even more.

If you have hills (and those hills get your HR up) those work as effective intervals.

1:15 ride with a :35 minute T run this morning.  Felt really good.

On a seperate note, and since we've been talking about healthy foods, I'm pretty irate with our gov't right now for this Monsanto Protection bill.  Soy is horrible for you folks.  Just remember that.  No matter what the media pushes it is a hazard.

THAT says it all!

Yep.  Banned in several countries due to the fact their GMO crap is dangerous, but we protect them here.  Go figure.  BTW they grow 90+% of the soy sold in the US.  DO NOT EAT SOY, don't take soy protein powders, no soy period unless it's fermented.

Thank you for posting about this!  I had not heard about it until you posted.  There is so much going on that it is hard to keep up with.  I just read about it, and it is very disconcerting and scarey that this was slipped in. I use to eat some soy products then stopped.  Is edame bad, too?  I eat it occasionally.

They're soy beans in the pod.  I'd assume so.  I'd also imagine that a snack of soy beans here and there isn't going to be a problem.

Hour Z1 trainer ride and a 5.2 mile run. Really solid brick following up Wednesday's outside run with another one. The trainer wasn't as hard as the intervals of the other day but today's run was much hillier especially on the way back and I felt really solid. I'm off today so I'll work some core into my day while hanging out with the kids and helping the wife get the house in order.

3200 in the pool this morning with 20x50 banded.  Feels like I'm making progress there.  Picked up my buddy's 404/808 combo for Galveston next weekend.  Going to get them on sometime after my 5.5 hours on the bike tomorrow.

1:05 with hill repeats done...whew! Now need to get my OLP's done this evening. We traveled to NC for Easter weekend and we didn't get in till midnight then not to bed until after 1 so messed up my whole day. However, the great thing about having a day off it gives me more time to get it done

morning everyone!

I had a good training day Thursday.  Got called into the hospital between 3am to 8 am but then was done for the day work wise. I slept 2 hours and then got my first ride outside... yippee... followed by run... followed by bikram yoga.  Kids were still out of town with the hubby and was why I had total-guilt-free-time .

A pretty ideal day: I feel so blessed and lucky to have the health for this kind of day!

20 minutes of core work and some foam roller to stay loose on an otherwise day off. Glad it is one I'm pretty sore and unmovtivated so it's nice that it came on a day off and not a long ride day.

Happy Easter all. Hope you have fun with your families today. I managed to get in 2 of the 3 hours I planned on the trainer this morning before the kids got up. I kind of figured that was going to happen so I went pretty hard so I'm happy with the effort and the family is more important than the hobby.

Funny perspective story. This guy Pat I'm friends with is a really good triathlete. He did Oceanside in 4:54 last year and that's a tough corse. 48 minutes better than my fastest last year. So another friend was doing it yesterday and I was monitoring his results and Andy Potts did the event and finished in 3:49!!!!! There's always a bigger fish. Stories like that keep me focused on myself and remembering that's who I'm competing with.

March is done. Pretty happy where I'm at.

March's totals:
Bike:26h 20m  - 483 Mi
Run:13h 00m 49s  - 84.05 Mi
Swim:6h 53m 50s  - 19650 Yd
Strength:1h 17m
Core Training:5h 40m

Happy Easter everyone.

Crazy weekend for me.  Last big training weekend before Galveston and yesterday was the 1/4 Marathon.  Looks like we raised over $6000 for the Blazeman Foundation this year bringing the total donation to well over $30,000.

Been off the grid for the week. I had a 3x15 run test last week. It did not go well. Unbeknownst to me at the time, it was the abrupt onset of a stomach bug that lingered throughout the week. As a result, I was in bed early this week. I had also been worried about my run times - that I had regressed somehow. But, I did a 5k yesterday and I did 22.28 (7:14 pace). Very happy with it. So, I am chalking up my run test to the stomach flu.

March

Bike - 18:44

Run 12:14

Swim 11:24

Strength 3:14

So I feel as if I am making gains all around. Shaved a minute off my 500 swim and bike is getting stronger. Am tired and pleased.

As my boy Toby just posted on FB: "Taper week has two main goals. 1) Try not to stab anyone. 2) Keep the tapertantrums to a minimum.  I don't know if I'll accomplish either one."

1600 of fist drills in the books.  It's amazing how short that feels these days.

1:15 on the trainer and a 10.05 mile run in the books. The run was the first time I've averaged under 9-minute miles for 10+ miles where none of the mile had an average heart rate of 150 or greater and my max heart rate never hit 160 and minus the first mile all the miles were sub-9 and the course was not flat.

With my recent gains I'm trying to reel in my grandiose expectations for my races that my ego is writing checks for and hoping my body can cash them, LOL.

Still did my core work after the run.

What do you do for your core work?

My staples are hyper-extensions, leg raises (where your back is against a pad and so are your arms and you're straight up and elevated), plank, side plank, bridge, crab, a modified warrior pose where one leg is straight back and the opposite arm straightforward parallel to your body, running balance drills on a core board, mini band side raises, mini band walks and this is the best one I own a thigh master and do hip abductor squeezes!!! LOL Suzanne Summers should be so proud. If you told me in the 20's I'd be doing that I'd laugh and call you a liar. My wife loves dropping that one to people we know but I don't care. I swear it works. I also do some side raises and extension drills on my roller to start the day.
