Total Time = 2h 02m 4s
Overall Rank = 272/343
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 31/32
Pre-race routine:

PB&J at 4:30am and another at 7:00 and a banana at 7:30. I can't perform in the morning without food! Got everything setup and talked.
Event warmup:

No warmups done. Light stretching. More talking.
Swim
  • 29m 6s
  • 880 yards
  • 03m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

My actual swimming felt decent, but I never got comfortable. I realized later that I was too worried about turning. I had learned how much I turn in open water during a practice and that was in the back of my head the whole time. I was constantly worried about going the wrong way. So rather than just going I was worrying.
What would you do differently?:

Stick my head in the water and go. I need a lot of swim work, but being my first tri I'll take it. At least I made it out on my own.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

I decided before hand that I would not hurry the transitions. You can see by the time I didn't. I didn't see any reason to hurry this on my first tri and screw something up.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. Now that I've done it I'm confident I can cut this WAY down. I score it below average only because of the time. I did everything right - just took too long.
Bike
  • 55m 23s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 18.96 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm shocked my bike was 27th in my AG. That AG must be pretty competitive. For sitting up on a road bike like a sail I am extremely pleased with the ride. Road with another big dude for a while. He dropped back when I passed a truck that was holding me up.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Maybe figure a way to be more aero. I could also use some work on long, sustained climbs.
Transition 2
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

Same thoughts here as in T1. Take my time and get it right. Relax and enjoy the race. It worked. My knee (injured in a softball game a few days before) was sore off the bike which did slow me some in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Do it faster. Not hurt my knee the week before a race.
Run
  • 30m 38s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The knee was hurting for about the first half which slowed me down. And I simply ran too dang slow. At the time I thought it was all I had. WRONG! I could have gone harder on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. I now know how hard I can go.
Post race
Warm down:

Cold towel, drinking water, talking to friends

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm a big dude. My first tri - inexperience. And quite frankly, a lack of training - mostly due to kids activities eating up time.

Event comments:

Awesome event. All my friends told me this is an excellent "first tri" and they were right. Well run. Great location and course. I highly suggest doing it if you are around.

Great job Rueben.  I do think that the 30 + age groups are the most competitive, at least in the races that i raced in.  I think the older age groups can handle the mental and physical pain better..  Based on your bike time your race was extremely competitive.  Very nice first tri!
