Member 15 Georgia | Subject: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I started training last June (2006) for the Georgia Smoke Divers course at the Georgia Fire Academy last year when I developed the arch and heal pain. It doesn't hurt while I run but kills me after it tightens up. I've had a injection in the heal and I've tried everything under the sun. The more I stretch the more it hurts. This has been going on for a year now... What can I do ?? |

Member 15 Georgia | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I'm able to sleep in a splint 2 out of 3 nights due to work. The doctor has told me he might have to place it in a permenent cast for three weeks..... Kind of figured it would heal up eventualy ? |

Master 1862 San Mateo, CA | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I've been dealing with PF for a year, now. It won't go away entirely despite going to phys. therapy, buying orthotics (though orthotics have made a big improvement), ice after run, stretching, and massage. So, I feel your pain...literally! |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Me too, i have had it for over a year now...I have tried stretching, icing, night splints, had two coritzone shots, and nothing is making it better. I decided to do a tri in September and have been running through the pain, but its getting pretty bad. I will make it through this tri, and then I might opt for the cast myself since my doctor can't suggest anything else...three weeks..ugh. I'm actually concerned about rupture...scary thought. |

Have you checked into e-soles (www.esoles.com) ? I saw an ad for them in a fitness magazine, and I'm going to set-up an appointment for a consultation at the very least. On a brighter note, I will add that after 14 months of struggling with PF, I feel like I've crested the hill in recent weeks, and most of the symptoms are beginning to subside - not entirely though as I still have days when it all seems like it's coming back, then the symptoms disappear. The one thing I noticed was stopping running altogether was not the best thing to do. If my heel wasn't sore, I still did a shorter, easier run at the local track. Although I cannot run every day at this point, I found that lots of stretching, massaging my feet, switching to the Brooks stability shoe, and ensuring I don't run if my heel feels remotely sore have enabled me to gradually increase the amount of my training, and finish without the post-run soreness. It's been a very slow process and has taken a lot of patience, but I feel like I'm on the cusp of being able to return to more substantial training. FWIW, it's gets better. |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I have orthotics, but they didn't help me. Right now I'm just running through it. After my tri, I plan to cut back my running to a minimum and stick with the bike and swim. We'll see...my latest thing is ice water immersion after the runs...hurts like hell, but we'll see if it works. Funny thing is I had it in both feet, but the right foot cleared right up with rest. Left is a mess. It sucks, and I hope I can address it once and for all in Sept. |

Master 1718 Loughborough, England | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Something else you may want to try is Ibuprofen gel. Icing is also helpful and lots of stretching, not just the plantar fascia but also other leg muscles - calf, hamstring etc. |

Master 2005 South Florida | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis A friend was just short of surgery for PF, when he tried Active Release Massage...it cured him. Here's a blurb about it: What is Active Release Technique?Active release is a soft tissue technique developed Dr. Michael Leahy, who is an engineer, and chiropractor. When a muscle or tendon is injured an adhesion (scar tissue) forms between the fibers. This adheres the tissue impairing the oxygen and blood supply to the muscles. This process deprives the nerves of oxygen and establishes a cycle of chronic, recurring pain. Active release allows a certified practitioner to break up the adhesions with their thumbs while the muscle is stretched. The treatment is safe and effective. Thousands of world champion athletes have discovered the benefits of Active Release. |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Don't let them cut on your foot for sure!!! I have seen nothing but negative comments from athletes who have had that done. This is a pretty common problem amongst NBA players, and you never hear about them having surgeries (at least I haven't). All the medical resources seem to point to rest and flexing that tendon, but I need to get through the next 2 monts. After that...I'm going to take it easy on the foot for awhile. I might try that ACT. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I have had PF since last October on and off. It started when I relearned how to run more efficiently. I got it about 2 weeks later...went from heal striker to forefoot landing. Strange as most PF folks who switch to forefoot landing cure their PF. How do you run? I went from PF for about 6 weeks to then running for 6 weeks gradually building up then it came back along with Achillies tendonities which I have had 3 bouts of it. Now the PF is less of an issue and doesn't hurt much but the numb calves scares the crap out of me. I did Active Release when my achillies tendoinities first came up along with my second bout of PF...did it help? I'm not sure as I started PT shortly there after. It improved but didn't go away 100%. Did you stop running for the last year? |

Member 15 Georgia | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I haven't been running much for the last 8 to 10 months. The problem with most Plantars Fasciitis is just every day life. I'm a firefighter and wearing turnout gear boots for 3-4 hours at a time is torture on my feet. Walking around barefoot is a big no-no ! Sandal's (flip-flops) are bad as well. Standing at all is bad........ One icing technique is to get a 20 oz. plastic Coke bottle, fill with water and freeze. Wear a very thin sock or just go barefoot. While standing, roll your affected foot over the center of the bottle from the heel to the ball of your feet. After the heel and arch are cold, place your foot in the bottom third of the bottle (concave and flanged area) and continue to roll with more pressure. Ice for at least 3 minutes or until the cold is to intense. I've been doing it twice a day. My doctor tells me that bicycling will help stretch the foot. But I'm not sure it helps or hurts PF ? |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Be careful about your cycling shoes and pedals. I changed from SPD mountain bike pedals (they were cheap and I wasn't sure if I was going to love riding!!!) to Look pedals and a carbon soled road shoe...I think it helped my PF. My PF has really flared up with the running. My Doc recommends the same icing technique your using. I have a bad right knee that flared up on me this weekend, so I'm going to take a week off running and just ride and swim...maybe it will help the foot!!! Good luck...be safe. |

I walked out (in a walking cast) with less pain than i walked into the hospital.' good luck |

Walking around barefoot is a big no-no ! Sandal's (flip-flops) are bad as well. Standing at all is bad........ If you have to wear sandals or go barefoot, have you thought about birkenstocks? Instead of going barefoot or wearing just socks, my physical therapist strongly encouraged me to wear birkenstocks around the house - they have excellent arch support. For a brief period I found that if I wasn't wearing my orthotics, I had to wear my birkenstocks. |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis too funny, I just googled for stores that sell birks in my area. I had them for years, but not recently. Regretfully, I have to ditch my addidas slip ons. I hear Birks really help. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis My husband has PF as well (he isn't an athlete), he went to PT, but biggest improvement came from wearing Birkenstocks all the time when awake. He has the Birkenstock inserts that are $90 that he puts into his regular shoes. We got him some dress birks that he wears when he travels or does trade shows that he is on his feet all day.

New user 3 | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Did the physio ever show you exercises to strengthen the muscles that support the arch? They are very simple exercises but you need to be shown exactly how to do them. Tibialis posterior and peroneus longus support the arch while you move. No arch collapse = no tensile force on plantar fascia = less provocation of symptoms Do a Google and go see a physio is my advice. |

Extreme Veteran 469 Western MA | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I suffered from plantar fasciitis right before my first marathon. I made a foot stapping using the technique below and it went away within two weeks. I reduced my running slightly and used the strapping the whole time. I ran my marathon 3 weeks after the treatment with no problem. Hope the link helps at least....

Master 1324 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis I've had PF area trouble over the last couple of years. Rest, ice, stretching, custom orthotics, night-splint, multiple ART treatment. No real help. I was treating the wrong area. You read that right. The PF area is not where the injury/problem was. Thats where the pain was, but not the injury. The gastroc (calf muscle), right below the knee, towards the inside. I developed Trigger Points (TP's) in both calves and they were "referring" pain to the PF area. Once I began actively treating the calf TPs, the PF improved. Try massaging your gastroc. Is it painful to push on some areas? Especially just below the knee? You probably have trigger points there. |

Extreme Veteran 790 Rocklin | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Mine is dianosed PF and as I extend out my run training it's getting much much worse. It hurts all the time now. I have almost exactly 2 months to my tri, then I'm going to take it off and swim and bike only. My doc wants to try a cast for 3 weeks which I might try after the race...I'm trying to avoid all the quakery out there...they will sell anything to someone desperate to cure this problem. |

1 | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Please check out the site, http://www.shockwavespecialists.com/index.htm I had this done 2 years ago on my left foot and have not had any trouble with it since. I have had an extremely painful right foot but due to a loss of insurance have not been able to get the treatment on it yet. I urge you all to consider it, it really works! |

Expert 626 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis Just the other day, I was reading in a medical journal that this issue can and has been treated with some type of Laser Surgery. Their are many type of laser systems, and this one I saw that people were being treated with just a few sessions (some insurances cover it) and was back to normal in no time. (ie. 4-6 weeks) and had no recuring problems. Try searching in "treatment"+"laser"+"plantars fascitis" and see what that gives you. I'll try to find which journal I saw it in. Good luck. |

Expert 626 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Can't shake Plantars Fasciitis ATW, I went back and found the article. If you check out the August 2007 issue of "Runner's World Magazine" and go to page 46, you will find the article. The article is labeled" Light-Footed Can a lasre therapy cure heel and arch pain? This person was back running in three weeks from 0 to 8 miles a week, which is not that bad. |
