How's your local economy? (Page 2)

OKC's unemployment has been among the lowest in the nation among large cities.  That is, lost jobs, but not as many as most places.  Some come on over!

Wait til after this ice storm though.  Nobody's interviewing today or tomorrow. 

Pittsburgh is doing, eh, I'd say about 50/50. We're not the worst, but we're not the best. Still medical jobs out the wazoo, still university jobs out the wazoo, still lots of construction going on (and very much needed roadwork...thanks Stimulus!). However there aren't a lot of high-paying jobs outside of the normal suspects, and those that there are are highly competitive. I'm underemployed right now with three jobs...although REI just adjusted our pay for "market competitiveness", but my other job(s) is/are in the nonprofit sector, which is even more lean than it used to be. Still looking for full time jobs pretty much everywhere and anywhere, but it is nice to have some cash coming in to pay the bills, but stressful because we're just barely making it. P is not getting a raise this year, despite the fact that his company is doing well (he works for a small web firm).

The business I'm in (backup power generation) tends to lag the economy, so we didn't feel the hit when everybody else did, but we are further away from recovery. We're not really expecting to improve much until Q4 2010.

the county i live/grew up in is one of the wealthiest in the nation (i think it's 7th) so not too much has changed here...a lot of government employees.

Two words: FLINT MICHIGAN!!! Our county unemployment rate is 16.6%. I am gainfully employed and so is my wife. The city of Flint has something like 25% unemployment.

another from atlanta here. I dont see much difference since the stimulus. Out of everyone i graduated with im the only one who has found a job outside teaching (i stock shelves). The majors people had were wide ranging from foreign languages to accounting. The grocery store i work at is one of the  busiest for the chain in the state. We actually increased profits in 09' but we also had more sales than ever before and were hugely under stocked on low velocity items. the place also in october came off a 6 month hiring freeze. The only people being hired had to have 100% availability. Amongst other things my parents are unemployed for a year now.

Spring Hill, TN here.. they recently shuttered the GM plant here so that was a definite punch in the gut.. some local businesses have been closing up shop due to the number of GM employees and indirect businesses (suppliers, etc) that were affected.. Overall the city is doing ok, I work in the Franklin, TN area which is a Healthcare hub, seems to be doing pretty well. Our company is another story, so keeping my eyes open at this point but was due to poor management from the top down...

Nobody has. It was a waste so big, that it took both sides of the aisle to produce.

We're very lucky to be damn near insulated from this downturn since it's occurred. UW-Madison has grant money coming out of its ears and the government is loathe to lay people off. I can honestly say that if no one had told us there was a recession, we wouldn't have had any idea.

Notice no info from Sin City (Las Vegas),  Things here are horrible. 

The main hiring industry is the hospitality industry, and casinos are laying off everyday.  The convention business is down due to companies reducing off site travel, as well as the airport traffic.  Real estate is in the toilet (unless you are buying with cash), and for the first time in history, more people are now leaving Vegas rather than moving in.

Management job offers are in the $8-$10 range that should be paying in the 60-80k range, but when you have 200 people applying for the same job......

If we could sell our house (upside down by $180k) we would be out of here in a flash.

Personally I am doing fine, however the community as a whole is poor. Unemployment rate in my county is around 14%. Freightliner plant went from 3 shifts to 1 and pillowtex closed down.

The county had 2000 real estate transitions in 2008 and 300 in all of 2009.

Last time I checked Houston's unemployment rate was above 7%.  I work for a general contractor and for us, 2008 was our best year ever followed by an incredibly slow 2009.  We've laid off about 15% of our employees in the past year, so I'd call our current economy pretty sucky (and there may be more layoffs coming).
