Hey, all.  Almost through the week and we've had our first real bout of Fall weather...mid-50s and windy as the high and starting to get frost at night in the higher elevations north of here.  Winter's coming...ugh.  Great running weather, though, as Gretchen noted.  Unfortunately I'm still not there with my ankle and foot - progressing for sure, just slower than I've ever recovered from an ankle injury before.  There are a couple of spots that react badly (as in, hurt like hell) when I land, push, or twist just a little off.  It's stable and doesn't bother me walking, but is still weak going down stairs and I'm up to about 12 minutes of running at E pace with like a 1.5/10 on the pain meter (like I feel it, maybe a little achy, but nothing bad other than the once a day reaction noted above).  Glad I'm in my off-season, and I'm doing great on the strength training, yoga, PT, etc.  I'm wondering now how many body parts is too many to PT at once.

Intervals with the running club last night and the Achilles feels great today.

I have committed to going to mtb interval training tonight with the bike club even though it means I am going to miss most of the hockey game.
The Lakers have had a difficult start to the season, tonight's game is away against the current leader and we have at least 5 players missing. So there's a good chance we'll get trashed so I won't be sorry to have missed it. The weather is nice, must make the most of it, as others have said

It was fun, we rode through the forest in the dark (lights on bikes of course) to a nearby technical mtb trail. My light stopped functioning half way through it, and it was pitch dark. Took my telephone out and finished the lap. Then we did 3 laps of a lit trail so I could see.
No problems with the ride home as I was surrounded by people with functioning lights

Home in time to see the 3rd period and the OT. We got one point, which considering the above is a good result. Coach was happy with the performance.

Gah!! Mountain biking with no light or one hand holding your phone?!? Tough decision!

My headlamp went out the other day on my am run and it was DARK out there. I also had to use my phone, which was probably a bit safer than if I had been riding! Awkward to hold it though.

Nice!  I like fall when the weather is like this, for sure.  40 degrees this morning, 73 by 2 PM...love those temperature swings.  My daughter is running the Baltimore half marathon this morning so it'll be a little warm (they don't start until like 10 AM) but not too bad.

I had a good low-key training week (not much SBR, but plenty of strength training), and made sure Fat Thor got his due with a meat pizza and three IPAs on Thursday night.  Still got up on Friday morning and in the pool before 6 AM.

Hope everyone has or is having a great weekend!

@Robert and Nicole:  where y'all at???  Hopefully I won't have to drag myself to Masters to find you!

Quick 30’ run this morning. It was chilly! 38F when I left, so long pants, long sleeves, hat, and gloves. Quickly realized pretty much all of that was an over reaction and I should have just worn shorts and a t-shirt. I’m terrible at dressing for cold runs. That was at about 8. Then at 10 I did masters for 3500yds. At 11:30 I raced home because the dogs were alone at home for the first time. They did well…no torn up stuff…but then, it was only 20’ tops.

How did it go for Mini Mike in the half?

Had a great day yesterday. Floorball in the morning (aka flexibility training). Not sure which team won but my young colleague scored less goals than I made saves from his shots so I win

Then I volunteered at the town’s marathon which is organised by my running club. 4 hours stopping traffic to let runners pass. Quite fun I must say. They ran 8 laps so we saw many runners pass several times and got to “know” them. I worked the second shift which started 2 hours after start so only saw the fast ones once but these are too into it to be fun anyway. The BOP people were much more fun and appreciative of our encouragements, jokes, dances….

Then home to watch hockey on TV. It was a home game but the man didn’t want to go so he cooked a nice meal to make me come home instead of going to the Arena. He knows how to handle Fat Nat.
We won despite a lot of missing players still. Happy days.

Today, a nice ride on my mtb is on the menu, have a nice Sunday (what’s left of it Andrew)

Mini-me had a great race yesterday...2:13:30 or so and negative split, including just over an hour for the last 10K so she's thrilled.  At least someone around here knows how to navigate a run race without hurting themselves.

Spent part of the weekend cleaning and re-arranging the Pain Cave so we can get Mini-me's bike in there, too.  So that will be a treadmill, three bikes, and assorted TVs, fans, dumbbells, straps, and a step platform.  It's a bit of a jigsaw puzzle getting it all together which we'll finish up next weekend.  Will post pics once we get it all sorted.

Off to Williamsburg for a little R&R and golf, plus I have to work a couple of days.

I think the BT forum is starting to get glitchy.

This says its from Nat, but is definitely a Gretchen story

Yeah, latest training science says the best way to train hard and remain injury free is to have a birthday that doesn't start with 19....

@Mike, Well done to mini-mike on her HM. That is a very extensive pain cave you've got going on. I'm jealous. The cabin is good, but nowhere near enough space for that sort of stuff. We're already having to plan a rearrange to make more space. And nice work on 3 IPAs and some pizza... that's also off season done right

@Gretchen. Good to see you ticking along, doing more in off season than most do in peak training weeks. Any movement on 'googling local halfs and marathons?'

@Nicole, where are you? I know training isn't great for you at the moment, but we want you to keep checking in. Or we'll send mike on a stalking mission.

For me, Week 4/23 done. A scheduled cutback week, with a bit of travel. Actually had 2 total days off, which is unusual for me.

Swim Life got in the way here. No swims this week

Bike x3, 3hr 30min, all zwift. As planned. Didn't do a particularly smart job scheduling things, and ended up doing the 2 hard workouts back to back. A bit dumb. But got the work in, and in my 2nd bike, (60 min tempo ride) actually recorded my all time highest 20min power, according to Training Peaks. Not really a sign of fitness, but a sign that I'm hitting those hard workouts properly this time.

Run x3, 2hr 30min. 19km. 2 treadmill, 1 real, nothing exciting, all easy miles nursing that knee.

Strength and mobility x4, all PT sessions, 1hr 30. Got what I'm supposed to do done. But I really need to work on my Romanian Deadlift form, I've noticed a bit of back pain at the end of my sets, which is not ideal. Some more youtube instruction in my near future.

Overall, 7 1/2 hours worth of work and I'll say a B for the week. No post run stretchy, or swimming. Which is a bit disappointing.

Moving on to week 5, It's a pretty standard build week, similar to week 1-3. Just building up that base. Goals for the week are to get back to that pool, and to get some morning runs in. I'd like to get away from the treadmill as much as I can. Otherwise, just keep things rolling.

Caught up and it sounds like lots of good stuff, and some injuries and sickness are happening.

Nathalie - I'm right there with you these days. Sorry to hear your achilles is still bothering you, and hope you get it worked out and get back into your routine! Your off season plan sounds PERFECT!

Gretchen - Congrats on the new pups!! They look like they are already head over heels for you!
And ouch with the neck spasms!! I've totally been there, it's horrible!

Andrew - Sorry to hear you were sick, but glad you are feeling better and back at it with your training!

Mike - Awesome job on the relay! Third place is excellent! Sucks your foot/ankle is still bothering you :-/ hopefully we're all healthy soon! Wouldn't that be amazing!

Loving all the gorgeous fur babies! Here's mine...she isn't one to join me on runs unfortunately...

I've had a busy couple weeks. I traveled to Denver on the 4th for a conference. Went out a little early b/c I'd never been to Denver before and wanted to explore. Walked a TON. It's an okay city, but SO DRY. I am on a medication currently that makes me really dry and Denver made it SO MUCH WORSE. I ended up getting sick, I think just a sinus infection because of it, and was pretty miserable through the conference. But I gave a talk with some colleagues that went really well!

Came back from the conference and went directly to my friend's wedding weekend. Wednesday night was the bachelorette party (a cooking class, and it was a lot of fun). I was in the wedding so we all stayed at a house near the wedding venue. Thursday was arranging flowers and such, then the rehearsal and dinner, Friday was hair and makeup starting at 8:30am, and the wedding, which was a blast, and Saturday was a post-wedding lunch at the Guinness Brewery. I was EXHAUSTED. Still went to a friend's bday that afternoon and played a little pickleball, but that night and Sunday I was dead to the world.

Work sucked this past week and I didn't work out at all other than walking to and from work Tuesday.
Yesterday I went for a 4 mile walk with a friend.
Today I went paddle boarding (it was absolutely amazing out) and did my grocery shopping so I can get my diet back on track.

Overall I'm in a good place mentally. Planning on getting back into my routine this week. I know I say that a lot, but with the surgery looming (exactly one month away), it should serve as pretty good motivation. I really think I will get back on track this week aiming for strength and yoga each day, at least 20 minutes total, and walking as much as possible.
