Master 1436 Wilmington | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim japarker24 - 2011-09-13 8:59 AM Livestrong, Assuming that picture is representative of the swim course and keeping to the tradition of Set Up Events using triangular buoys as "turn buoys", then your red line is "cutting the course". If my assumptions are wrong, please excuse the ignorance. Alan On this wim you can swim anywhere you like. there are actully 4 or 5 trinalge buoys almost dead in the middle to help navigate. I think it would be hard for setup to make you have to go around the turn buoys and fight current just to do so. When you start the race they dsay swim left and go around the first bouy and only folks doinf this race for the first time do that everyone else swim straight towards the docks |

So you don't have to go around the buoys. FYI - This will be my second year for this triathlon. Hopefully I can avoid the monster jellyfish sting I got last year. -Greg

Member 164 SE North Carolina | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim Just swam the course this morning at 0630, across the channell you dont feel much current but as soon as you get along the docks is when you really pick up some speed, beware of the jellyfish, got stung twice, once on the cheek and the other time on the arm....

Master 1526 Bolivia, NC | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim MANDOWN - 2011-09-13 3:47 PM How do you avoid the jellyfish? I got stung earlier this year and I'm not looking forward to another.Just swam the course this morning at 0630, across the channell you dont feel much current but as soon as you get along the docks is when you really pick up some speed, beware of the jellyfish, got stung twice, once on the cheek and the other time on the arm.... The closest site I find is that Holden Beach is 81 degrees and holding. That's a mean temperature with ranges from 79 to 83. I think if you have a wetsuit I'd put it in the car, just in case. Master 1526 Bolivia, NC | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim The weather forecast for Saturday is dismal. If the swim is canceled either because of fog or rain I'm just going to pick up my toys and go home. I only signed up for this race for the swim portion. |

blynott, I agree with you. If they cancel the swim, would they then cancel the bike? Seems the bike would be cancelled as well...so will they just cancel the whole thing then? When will they make these decisions?

Master 1526 Bolivia, NC | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim frm-fat-2 If the swim is canceled because of fog then they would probably turn it into a duathlon (Run, bike, run). If it's raining too hard then they probably would cancel the whole thing. But tonight the local weather man said that the worse weather would be inland, away from the coast. So, except for the cold (Upper 50s to low 60s), we might be OK. I'm bringing a raincoat and warm ups, brrrr.blynott - 2011-09-14 7:36 PM The weather forecast for Saturday is dismal. Master 1436 Wilmington | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim walkaboutk - 2011-09-14 8:39 PM This is really good stuff and nice of you livestrong191 to put out there. Wilmington sprint was my fist tri experience, it was such a nice experience, that I kept coming back at varying distances. Thanks again for breaking water/tide down! One thing I do recommend is to go walk to the swim finish at seapath and look at those channel markers so you get a prospective of where you should be aiming for then afterwards take a drive to blockade runner and look at the them there too. Even with no buoys in the water you will feel comfortable where to go and see where in relation the channel markers are so when u swimming sight 3 times u home. REMEMBER RED then GREEN and on the seapath. My first time doing the race was two years ago and swam like everyone else and it took me 24 min( I am descent swimmer). I swam it last year the way I shown above in the drawing 17min thats including the run to T1. I swim relay in the B2B half 1.2 mile with current a little longer in the channel same course 26m:55 and no current help and cold and unfit 37m10 16th fastest out of 50 swimmers and I swam alone the whole. So what I am just showing folks is the way to swim this course fast and easy. Its been well vetted |

Expert 1074 Tyrone, Georgia | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim I sure am a terrible swimmer. My 1500 meter OWS in the lake in Maryland was much faster than that of today, even with the current. Good thing my bike and run was respectable. Good time today and a good crowd with great volunteers! |

Master 1526 Bolivia, NC | Subject: RE: Wilmington YMCA swim Well, I survived! I was happy to hear that wet suits were legal, thanks Alan. Although I have no idea how the temperature of the water dropped from 80 over the last three weeks to 76 this morning. I tried to follow Livestrong191's swim route but I kept going too far right as I crossed the channel. Once I got near the red marker the rest of the swim went well. I talked to a number of people who felt that they didn't get the boost from the current today that they usually do. The swim really left me exhausted and I underperformed on both the bike and the run. Oh well, there's always the next race. Thanks for all the good advice. Bob |

Last night at the pre race meeting RD said the temp was 80 degrees. Thats 4 degrees overnight.
I thought the current wasn't that much of a help until the last 500 yds or so. In the end, I actually overshot the ladders and needed to go back against the current a little bit to get out.

Thanks actually climbed a little over the last two months with moving. Weighed in yesterday morning at the race at 207, this morning at 202. Hope to be back down in the 195 range by the time for the 1/2 marathon in November. Thanks again. |
