Sme thing with the use of the word Tar-baby.  Some politician, I believe, used it and got flamed for it.

In some circles, yes.  For example, the powers that BT banned the use of the word "porn" in certain threads, becuase one person complained.

Someone will always choose to be offended by something.  How anyone could be offended by what a football coach they've never met said is way beyond my comprehension.

We don't need no stinking dictionary for tar baby. We had Uncle Remus and Br'er Rabbit. Zippity do dah, zippity aay, my ole my what a wonderful day. Plenty of sunshine comin' my way, zippity do dah, zippity aay. Mr. bluebird on my shoulder............

Ok, here's an answer from another Cajun.

The word IS used as a term of endearment by some Cajuns, and this is what I grew up with.  Some view it as offensive.  If you're not a part of that group to have the proper perspective, you have no business using it.  I think he should have used better judgment.

Having said that, I'm not the slightest bit offended, but I know others are.  I think the "n" word is an appropriate analogy.  Whether it's right or not is irrelevant.  If you're going to use a word that people believe is a slur against them, you can expect some backlash.

If he makes the remark in February 2004, is there as big an outcry? Does this "off-the-record" recording to a Miami reporter even make it to the public light?

Course, the only Cajuns in my family are there through marriage.  My people are all from way up north:  Monroe, Shreveport, etc. 

This confused me quite a bit as a child growing up in La.  "Coon" was bad.  "Coonass" wasn't.  It took me a while to figure that out.  

From my perspective (23 years in Cajun Country before moving to CO after college), not many people outside the south have ever heard of the term coona$$.  I have to put up with people asking me if everyone lives on houseboats and drives a pirogue to work.  The movie "Deliverance" doesn't help. 

 As for Saban, we all loved him when he was at LSU, but now he's just a lying snake.  I hope his future recruits remember him saying "I am not leaving Miami" constantly in the weeks prior to leaving........................

Yes... when I first met Eric's mom and step-dad, I had to deal with that stupid crap.  When he learned that my parents live in Louisiana, his step-dad even asked (I like to think as a joke) whether my parents had all their own teeth, and whether they were related before they got married.

I was nice.  Too nice.  Fortunately, Eric and his sister told him to knock it off.
