A friend of mine told me that our soldiers over in Iraq and Afghanistan are lacking in simple things such as toothbrushes, and there are men and women over there who get NO MAIL from home. So, I signed up through the following website and adopted a soldier. All they ask is that you send a letter to the soldier once a month and a care package once in a while. There are a lot of websites out there, so if you're interested, you don't have to use the one below.

I figured that it's the least I can do.

As a former military spouse (we just left the military in July) THANK YOU for supporting the soldiers over there. My husband would tell me of soldiers not receiving mail or care packages and it would break my heart. There deployments are for a year or longer, imagine no mail, thinking noone cared about you. I would send extra boxes so he could share more with his soldiers.

Thank you for thinking of these soldiers who are so far from home serving their country, especially at the holiday time.

To all of you...THANK YOU!!!  You just don't know how much this will do for a soldier/sailor etc.  Sometimes, it is the things that you get from complete strangers that mean the most.  During my deployment last year, I had a school class from my hometown send me cards from all of their 5th graders....Words can not describe how I felt during that deployment when I received those cards...and I would go back and read them again when I was having a tough day....actually, still do.

And for those that can't send anything...just say a prayer and thank-you for the troops that are overseas right now fighting for us.  We tend to forget about them....Even I, who most know that I am in the military, tend to forget or take for granted the opportunity of getting to spend the holidays with my family, when many of troops won't even be able to make a phonecall to their family members.

Again, Thank-you!!!

Going to sign up right now. Thanks for letting us know about this. We should all do this, expecially during the holidays when I'm sure the soldiers are missing their families. How sad.

Having been there (and heading back again), I thank You All for this effort. The only thing I recommend is that you find an organization like the ones listed in the other msg's so that you can send your mail/care packages to a specific Sailor/Soldier/Airman instead of the "to any soldier". I have seen stacks of these "any soldier" letters and packages piled 15 feet (not exagerating) high in Bahrain because the postal orderlies have to try to figure out where to send them, and it can clog up the mail system.

Also, one item that is always appreciated is the sports page from a weekend paper. It may be old news by the time it gets there, but it will still get worn out from changing hands.

Again, thanks to all who participate in this!!

John

So, I just signed up to adopt one also, but from a different org. They talk about 'screening' you like it's med school or something. Wonder what they're looking for?

I hate to throw a damper on this whole thing, but I went to the site and when I got to the form they sure were asking for a lot of information.

My background is that I managed a website for 4+ years and have seen just about *everything*.

How do I know these guys are for real? I saw their news articles link and am trying to source that back to the original story on the news org site....

I would love to participate in something like this to support others that are serving outside our borders but really have to hesitate at just jumping on dashing out and giving all my personal info....

Hate to be a spoil sport, but unfortunately can see and have seen, people set up sites and take advantage of the goodness of others .....

Point of this rant...be careful where you're giving out your personal information. May be worth an extra email just to feel them out and if and how they respond.

okay, okay,
so I super sleuthed a bit
(read: used google)
and found their media mentions they were talking about....

They do sound like their legit.

sorry to be a damper and be uber-paranoid, but unfortunately it's so easy for someone to really pull the wool over people's eyes in this day and age and it just really pisses me off to see people with good intentions get taken advantage of....

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone...

I didn't like the looks of the site either, so I looked around for one linked to an org I had heard of. Ended up signing up for this one: www.adoptaplatoon.org.
