Pre-race routine:

Up at 6:50 AM, grabbed a cherry turnover and my gear. Got everyone loaded, that is wife, daughter, and son.

Drove through the wind, had spattering of snow and it was a bone chilling 14 degrees, with 23 MPH gusts.
Event warmup:

Swam 300-350 yards, stretched a little and got ready to go.
Swim
  • 21m 29s
  • 1000 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crummy swim for me, but then what can I say. I have been skipping swim practices, and not really focusing on doing anything. Even when I go, I don't have a set plan. So I end up stretching breaks and not really helping myself out.

I started slow and then got slower as I went along.
What would you do differently?:

Hummmm maybe I should start really focusing on swimming and follow a real plan..... naaaawwwww why would I want to go and screw up a bad thing?

Comments:

In the run time.

I got out of the pool and walked (no running in the building) to my gear. I did not take off my suit, which THIS time was a BIG mistake. (More on that below) dryed off best I could got dressed and headed out the door.
Run
  • 39m 29s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

I headed out and I could kind of tell it was going to be a tough day. I did not grab a wind jacket this time (I should have) so the wind... did you see I said it was gusting up to 23 MPH?... was can we say colder than a ditch diggers knee. (You can fill in your own little colder than line there.)

Since I had not run since the LAST splash and dash (knee problems early in that run, had me pretty scared that I had some nasty stuff going on.) I was not going to push really hard this run. I was moving along fast enough to catch Trigirl10 (now Trigirl12) she was running/walking along. She had her balaclava (thin and still letting wind in) and when I caught her I started running with her. So I slowed down to encourage her to keep going. It really was terribly cold, she was not dressed warm enough for this run, and this time I didn't have anything that I could give her to help.

We caught up with my son and wife, my dear wife was walking the run, and had her coat on. So she was able to give my daughter her scarf.

As I was running the last lap, I could tell I was getting chilled. The wet suit had allowed enough water to soak into my shorts/sweats that I was starting to feel pain in the privates. If it had been another 20 minutes I am afraid it could have gotten frost bite. Ouchy!

Thankfully I was able to finish and get inside to the showers to warm up.
What would you do differently?:

1. Run more
2. Change out of my suit
3. Take my running jacket (wind breaker) and bike pants.
4. Drop the daughter....well maybe not. Although as much whining as she was doing, I very well may NEXT time.... (I know you will read this Trigirl10, NO COMPLAINING!!)
Post race
Warm down:

This time it should be called the WARM-UP description.

Shower, grabbed some cookies and then lunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can you say CCCCCCOOOOOOOLLLLLLDDDDDD!

Lack of training due to knee issues.

Please note, when I say overall decision making was BAD... I think it started when I decided to actually GET OUT OF MY NICE WARM BED AND DO THIS RACE! This is one of those....I really should have just snuggled up to the mrs... and enjoyed the comforts of married life.

Event comments:

Man this was as cold as I have done.

I hadn't expected to read a race report from you on this one.  Way to get out and do it.  Sounds like a really tough day all around.  Be careful freezing things that are not supposed to get cold.

Look forward to the improvement as you get back into it.

Awww...you get plenty of days to snuggle up to the Mrs.

Glad to see you get out and test the knee.
