I took a swim lesson a couple of weeks ago, and the coach showed me a new tool for doing catch up drills that I'd never thought of or seen. Take a piece of PVC pipe (1/2" diameter or so - not big) that is about 8-12" long. Put a PVC cap on each end - this way the pipe floats. When you are doing the drill, hold the pipe in your hand, and switch hands with the pipe out in front of you. It forces you to wait for your hand in recovery to catch the hand out in front.

This may be old to everyone else, but it was new to me so I thought I'd share it.

I took half of a cardboard coat hanger and wrapped it in duct tape.  It works just fine!

I just started doing this drill in the last month and it is by far my favorite. For me it feels as if it keeps me from flailing when I am getting tired towards the end of a set...

I've also seen them in a "vee" shape.....

We do the same thing in practice, but we dont cap the ends, so it doesnt float. Then you really dont want to mess up, cause then you have to swim all the way down and get it...haha it is very helpful though!

My coach had me use a stick while doing it in open water...it floats & is free.

Cool.  That's actually a drill I've been trying to perfect, so I'll be giving one or two of these suggestions a try.  Thanks!

Ok, so maybe not so new but obviously popular. The advantage of a stick of some sort over a kick board for me is that my hands tend to drop out in front, so a stick makes me keep them up whereas a kickboard would tend to provide some buoyancy. But, either way it certainly helps with the drill. I never could quite get it before. These were other great ideas too.

We use to use a swim paddle in Master's class, works quite well if you have'm in your bag or on the deck. Otherwise, a second set of backup or old goggles work too.
