Word of warning - the tubes you get in your wheels may be really cheap. Note that this isn't a complaint, as they're a low cost consumable part, but I ended up flat in the rear with just plain failure in under 20 miles. Double check the tubes you get so you don't end up miles from home with a flat you didn't have to have.

What bike do you have? My Varese has yellow stem caps which designate it's probably Continental tubes, which should be of fairly high quality.

One of my tubes blew in the car on the way home from picking up my bike. I figure these things have been sitting around in the warehouse for a while. So, even if they're decent quality tubes, they're old and brittle.

deana your right. that is a god point. Probaboly a good idea to change the tubes. I should do that on my roadie before my HIM also. 2 years old and yet to change a tube.

Parma, but it really shouldn't matter, as the tube may be the least expensive part on the whole bike.

True. Well, I've logged a little over 30 or so miles at 90 - 100 PSI and I've been okay so far. Maybe I just have clean roads.

Hm...or maybe you're running on low pressure. Road bikes typically run closer to 120 psi.

For those getting flats right off the bat, check the rim tape (or have the LBS check it and change it).  Tends to be problem on most new rides.

the bear - 2008-05-05 10:27 AM

Two months after posting this, #1 son decided, and wife OKed the purchase of a bike for him, so we now have a 57 Varese on the way.

In an ironic twist to this thread, the Varese we ordered was shipped on the 7th and, per the tracking number, scheduled to arrive here on the 9th. Tracking showed the bike arrived in Memphis on the 8th, then departed at 10:32 pm. Then nothing. By Monday, the 12th, we called FedEx for info and they initiated research. On Wednesday the 14th, Fed Ex advised us to call Javelin and file a claim. I called Dave at Javelin, he was less than optimistic, said give it a week or so, but he'd probably have to give us a refund. The bike was lost.

The Friday before Memorial Day weekend (23rd), I called Dave, got voice mail, left a message asking for an update on my refund. Tuesday morning (27th) I got a return voice mail on my phone from Dave, saying the miracle had happened, FedEx found the bike, was relableing it and that we should have it by the end of the week.

Well, yesterday morning she got here! Dylan, #1 16-yo son, had it assembled and at the LBS (where he works) for 11 am for fitting and adjustments. While there, he and mama bear went on a shopping spree, spent all of his next check buying Keo pedals, a Rudy Project aero helmet, Cateye wireless computer, and cages, all to match the white and black color scheme. His boss and owner of the LBS gave him a great deal on the accessories and refused to take payment for the two hours worth of fit and adjustments. In gratitude, mama bear cooked spaghetti for the whole shop today, and Dylan named his bike after her.

So, ladies and gentlemen, here are Dylan and Lisa:

And Lisa alone:

Great to hear that it worked out in the end. Wow, you have tons of different stuff on your Varese than the mine and the ones I've seen. Is that carbon fiber on the seat stays? If so, I am jealous. I notice you have different wheels and tires too, but what I'm really curious is about the brakes. What kind of brakes and brake levers did you recieve?

Oh, yeah, I forgot to post about that part.

Before they even shipped, I got a call fron Dave saying there was a "mix-up" when they took my order. Evidently they oversold, and only had this demo bike left, no more stock production bikes. This one has, as you noticed, carbon seat stays. It also has Ultegra 10-speed derailleurs and cassette rather than the Campy Veloce), and Zero A028 wheels (instead of the Easton Vistas).

Nice to hear, especially since you started this thread, that you ended up with the cherry in the bunch! Nice upgrades, John, your boy's got a sweet ride. I'm jealous that tri'ing is such a family affair for you.

Ohhh, okay, Javelin makes bikes...I thought people were buying javelins to mount on the backs of their bikes to prevent people from drafting.

I thought this was about the Car.

Now I know why the box was so small when I got my Javelin, and the engine is VERY VERY underpowered.

Guess what? So, my Parma got stolen, and I was under the false impression that I had to buy another road bike to get my insurance payout. But, nope. The LBS speced out an Orbea Aqua as a comparable, and the insurance company cut me a check. So, looks like what I'm going to do with said check is get myself a Sizzano (the only thing they have left in my size), and some sort of crapola commuter bike. Woot! 2 bikes for the price of one!

Alright guys,

Im 5'11 and ride on a trek 2300 road bike.  Looking for a tri bike, but dont wanna drop a fortune.  Id like something thats not too cheap though, I guess in the same range as the 2300 trek I have.  Im looking at the sizzano (as thats all they have left), but am not sure if its a step down in quality from the trek 2300 (I know the sizzano does not have carbon seat stays, and hte 2300 has ultegra, and sizzano has 105, 2300 has bontrager race lite wheels, not sure how they compare to whats on the sizzano?? ( I could be way off base here, thats why im asking).  Im thinking I would need a 54cm?  any thoughts, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

Bear how tall is your son and what is his inseam.  I've got a 55cm Varese waiting at home for me and am a little worried it might be a bit big.  I'm 6' with a 33.75" inseam.  Anyway I have my fingers crossed.

I am 5 10 and ride a 58 cm Trek 1000 road bike. I got the 54 cm Javelin Varese tri bike and it seems to fit me fine.

It does come with compact cranks, so climbing is easier, but I seem to have lost a little top end speed.

Well,  I ordered a Sizzano because they didn't have any Varese's left in my size.Cry

Oh well. This will be my first tri bike as well.

So how are the tires on the Sizzano? Will I need to replace them or are they of decent quality? How much does it weigh stock without pedals or anything? Is the wheelset decent? Oh, and I still cannot believe they have bikes left after three months at these prices. Insane!

Just my luck, I leave Geoff a message to order a sizzano and I look when I get home from my meeting at they are all out of the 55cm in the 700 wheelset.  So now I ask, is there anyone out there willing to part with their Sizzano, or their Varese?  Im looking for a 54 or 55cm frame.  Please call me at 210 288 6154 if possible.

Thanks,

Marcus

Wow, that sucks. I ordered my 55 cm Sizzano on Monday....glad I did too.

So does anyone know how many bikes they started out with (including road bikes)? It must have been a load.

I had to bite the bullet and buy my Varese off ebay since there were no more at the warehouse.  I ended up paying $700 but I thought it was still a good deal, not as good of a deal as i would of liked.
