Total Time = 44m 1s
Overall Rank = 3243/3321
Age Group = 20-29
Age Group Rank = 487/496
Pre-race routine:

breakfast: plain panera bagel + a little light cream cheese and a lot of water. hung out in panera with my friend who signed up for the race with me and her hubby and hit the clean bathrooms
Event warmup:

the walk to the start from panera took about 10 minutes, partially b/c we had no clue where we were going for the first 5. that was the warm up
Run
  • 44m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run. The weather was a little chilly, but not so bad. Warmed up quickly. This 5K probably is an easier course in terms of the terrain. There is only one hill and you run down it to start. Maybe the first 1/2 mile is down hill. The rest of the course is extremely flat. My first mile was pretty fast - around 12 minutes, and that was because of the downhill start. I felt pretty good though and I hadn't run a 5K in over a year, so gotta start somewhere.
What would you do differently?:

1. Not wear my vest. I got hot and there was no where to put it.
2. Bring my own water bottle (fuel belt?) next time.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around the post race area in search of propel and bananas!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe shouldn't have worn my vest during the run b/c I got hot later. Wasted a minute or so at the water station.

Event comments:

Great atmosphere and the course is pretty easy. Good race for anyone to do whether you are an elite athlete or a beginner. It's pretty cool seeing all those green shirts running around Baltimore. The one thing that brings this down is the water station. There was one station, around the 1.5 mile mark. Maybe it was fine for the beginning of the pack. I mean there are 4000ish people in the race and I was in the last 1000, but still, there were like 5 people standing around one container of water pouring it into a cup and you had to stand in line. That really sucked, to have to come to a complete stop to grab water. I think that if you know this is a race that has such a spread in time, which it usually does looking at past results, there should be enough water containers that someone doesn't have to wait in line.

Oh, and I forgot to add that if you like free beer, then that's a plus.  I don't understand the drinking after running thing..but whatever, lol!

Good job on the race - saw your blog thru BT Blogger, then found your race!  A potential tip for being too hot when wearing a vest:  depending on the vest, I just unzip mine halfway, take my arms out and then let the vest hang down, inside out, from my waist (don't know if that makes sense, but it works...)  Being half zipped up, it seems to stay where it is.

Keep enjoying those races.

Very nice job.  Free beer sounds like a good thing, but when the race is over must be hard to stomach.

I agree.  I didn't have any..just the water.  I don't like beer on a non-race stomach though..so I'm biased.

Congrats!

Nice way to beat your time pace by a lot

I bring a little hand held Nathan water bottle for some races as that is what I use when I train.

I skip the free beer after races too~

Great run!

I use a fuel belt for 10K and distances but usually don't bother for less cause it's just aggravating to me but jammed up water stops would make me think again about using the fule belt

yeah, my st patty's day race had lots of free beer and i just felt sick. ugh. even if i didn't, i need to re-hydrate at that point!

again, great race.

most have better water stations than that! but i saw lots of water bottle fanny packs at the half mary. made me think of getting one... i find it a challenge in summer races to stay cool.

great race! Glad I read your report b/c you did a great job and I also learned a cool "what to do when you're hot with nowhere to put your vest" trick
