Subject: RE: Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr on 9/20 Funny how the world changes....
When I was a kid and teen in the 60's and 70's I had to keep quiet about the fact that I read the likes of Poul Anderson, Harry Harrison, and Harlan Ellison (the closest thing I have to an idol and the reason I became a writer ).
I read the Trilogy so many times I could recite Elvish passages verbatim. But to admit so was to court disaster. Even though I was an athlete the connotation connected with those who read Sci-Fi and Fantasy was always bad.
Today its become more than okay its become hip and trendy to be an adult into Fantasy....
In fact for our twentieth wedding anniversary my wife gave me a new boxed set of the Trilogy.
When LOTR (the movie ) hit the big screen I was of course waiting on line to be one of the first to see it. My son was with me. After Galadriel's monologue explaining the background comes the scene when Gandalf is riding into the Shire. My son noticed I was tearing up and getting a bit emotional, yes I know ridiculous for a 40+ year old.
He asked why I was crying and I replied, "I've waited a lifetime for this."
Now I'm a pretty tough guy having grown up in NY's Little Italy where you traded skin as a rite of passage but these books were my escape and the characters my heroes. To see them come alive the way they did was overwhelming.
Whatever.... So I'm a geek.
