I'll be at the park this weekend - I'll check the water temp and report back. Last year it was more than warm enough without a wetsuit.

What is the lake like?  I'm guessing its really shallow, but that is just a guess.  Normally weedy, cloudy?

Here is the quick response I received about the water temp:

"The temp is on average in early June somewhere in the low to mid 70s. I'll ask the park director what the temp is now and get back to you. . . I'm not sure if the lake is open to swimmers before Memorial Day."

Depth of lake - you'll be able to cut about 100 yards off the swim distance by running in/out if you want/need to. The shallow area start/finish will be somewhat weedy if the temperature is similar to last year. The weeds were basically non-existent until the week before last year's race - then the warm weather arrived along with the weeds. Other than the start/finish, you won't see any weeds but you also won't see much of anything else. Visibility is poor - cloudy water - not dirty - just cloudy.

Great reports guys.  Thanks a lot!

For folks that are doing this as their first race:  While you may be able to walk/run through waist deep water, I would recommend that you continue to swim until your hands are touching the ground.  The reason is that running through water (more so than  walking) takes a lot more effort than continuing to swim through the water.  Now if you are nearly at the end of your swimming capacity or are struggling with the swim, by all mean do what you have to do.  But the point is, keep swimming until its too shallow to swim.  It'll save a lot of effort, especially if the grade to get out of the water is very shallow.

As scary as it sounds, I'm considering an OWS this weekend.  I'm going to be out at Duck Lake near Albion this weekend and might give it a go.  We have to put my FIL's docks in, and I'm my year to get in the water.  Wetsuit, double caps, and a wish for booties and gloves.

Stellar!

Matt - for sure let's line up a group training session at Hawk Lake. This will also be my first tri and it would be greaet to get together out there before the real deal.

Tentatively looking at May 17th or 24th.  I don't think I'm going to do the 5k on the 3rd.

Preferably fairly early in the morning (ready to ride at 8am?).  Bike and run for sure.  Likely brave the chilly waters for a swim.

I get to go to a pool today, if I can swim 400 yards in a decent time for me say less than 17-20 minutes, I think I will do the tri. This is going to be tough, really tough. Anyways, I'll report back once I finish.

Sigh, I only did about 150 yards in a little under 3.5 minutes. Going to try some strength exercises and seeing if i can improve that number next week. I guess I still have some time to figure out what I need to do.

I think this even t will sell out.  They are allowing 500 entries.  I got an email today that said they have ~130 spots left.

I am running this saturday in the 5k.  I am still unsure on the swim part, is there a time limit?

There is no time limit on the swim (or any other) portion. At least last year there wasn't. Several people last year "took breaks" during the swim and hung onto a lifeguard's board/boat/etc. So long as you don't get out of the water, you can "rest" as long as you need to. But that was last year when the field was capped at 250. This year they are allowing up to 500 people participate.

I will be at the 5K this Saturday if anyone wants to meet up.

Its official.  There will be more BT folks at this race, than any other place that I've been.

We might need a party tent or something.

That would actually be really cool. I haven't met any of you yet. And I'm really looking forward to Hawk Island...

Way cool! As June 1st approaches, let's try to line-up a gathering spot on-site before the race. It would be great to place names with faces... and to get even more fired up for a great event.
