Forgot the question. What is the difference between these 2 different tire sizes? Also, if I already have 700x23 and would like to to switch to 25's, will I need new rims?

2mm

The 23/25 is the width of the tire. Most stamdard road rims will accomodate either size.

You won't need new rims.

You might notice a little decreased rolling resistance, but most likely you won't notice much of a difference at all, unless you're already a high-level cyclist/racer. I've been on 25, 23, and 20mm wide tires, and I didn't notice much difference, if any.

700/25 tires can sometime be a benefit for heavier riders or on roads that have alot of cobble or ruts. The slightly wider dimensions can help suck up the chaos and reduce pinch flats.

And it entirely depends on the manufacturer.  One companies 23 may actually be close in size to another's 25.  You honestly would not notice much of a difference more than likely.

There is a limit to how big a tire you can go to though. A 25 should be NP, but going to a 28, 30 or 32 will not only effect performance, but you'll get them stuck in your brake arms and have frame and/or fork rubbing the tire. Beyond a 25 will be tough to fit in most road or especially tri bikes due to the aero rear wheel profile of the seat tube.

I'm 215lbs and I strongly prefer 700x25 or 700x26 to 700x23.  I notice a big difference in comfort.   Right now I am running 700x26 tires at 125psi and they are still plenty fast, but a lot more comfy.

Hijack alert!

On a similar note, but for a different type of bike. I'm very much a noob, sufficiently so that I'll be doing my first few (sprint) triathlons on a hybrid: to wit, a Trek 7.2 FX. It came stock with 700x35 tires, but I think I'd like to go with something narrower and maybe a bit slicker. The guys at my LBS didn't have much definitive to say about going to a narrower tire, and my e-mail requests to Trek have thus far proved fruitless.

Anybody have any recommendations as to the narrowest reasonable tire for a bike like this? I saw a 7.3 FX with 700x30s, but the wheels on the two bikes are different: Matrix 750 for my 7.2 FX, Bontrager Camino for the 7.3 FX. I haven't been successful finding any information on the Matrix 750, other than that it comes stock on any number of bikes.

Any help would be much appreciated, even (especially?) if it's advice along the lines that it wouldn't make much difference.

Okay, I see the difference. On the same topic, what do most of you prefer to use and why, 23's or 25's?

Bob, are you on 26" rims?

OK, you're going to force me to expose even more of my noobishness. From the 700x35 indication on the tire, I'd have assumed I was on a 700mm rim, which is a bit bigger than 26". Am I just thinking about this wrong, and there's something that I need to know about before I can even properly ask for help on this?

Thanks for helping, though.

700X20

Why? Only because my first bike came with 19's and when I switched to Michelin Pro2Race tires, the smallest width was 20 so I went with them and have been happy riding 20's - never a reason to try a wider tire, except now that I need some new ones, it's usually the 700X23's on sale, so I might have to try them out next.

23's -- they've always worked for me.

I ride 700x23's b/c that's what my bike came with and I'm comfortable with that size. I'd like to try out something slightly smaller and something slightly bigger but when the wallet comes out it seems to always pay for 23's *shrug*

Tri_bob - did you find out what tires you could put on your wheels?

I'm trying to find out exactly the same thing and am getting nowhere.

There is very little difference between most 700x23 and 700x25 tires. Some manfacturers tires tend to run a little small in some models (my latest continentai 23's are actually more like 20's) If your bike came with 23's you can run 25's with no worries. and vice-versa.

I moved from Michelin Pro Race (2) 23's to 21's for race days last year and truly felt a difference.  I don't think all small adjustments are worth it, but this one was for me.

Not a whole lot of difference, 25's tent to be more forgiving when it comes to pinch flats and improper pressures. I always ride on heavier 25's during the cold months as I want a tougher tire to avoid replacing tubes while freezing.

I use 700x23's for racing and sometimes training in the summer.

Keep in mind, that rolling resistance wise you are better off with a quality 700x25 than you are with poor quality 700x23.

You can't tell the difference unless you tried it since it will depend on your usage. But for me,the slightly wider dimensions can help suck up the chaos and reduce pinch flats.
