It's still very early in the season, so it will be cool in the morning, though heat up by 11. Provided you're doing the sprint, you'll probably be off the course by 9:30. Last year they handed out cold and soaked hand towels to cool off with, which speaks for the race director's attention to detail on this race. x2 The folks who run this race, Klein-Clark, pretty much do all of the events here in the Palm Springs Valley. I've been to more than a couple of their races and I can assure you that they are a first-class operation. I have no doubt that this year will be another great event! |

I was thinking about that sandy portion of the race a few nights ago and had a visual of me biting it there. Woohoo!!!2- Most of the approach road into the lake has been re-done. So, you're still going down a small, steep hill into T2, but the sand has been removed and it's all smooth road for that section. |

Veteran 399 | Subject: RE: Toyota Desert International Triathlon Yeah, if you recall it was both sandy and really bumpy because the gravel was all broken up. But that whole section has been re-done. There's even a brand new station house that just opened a few months back. |

Veteran 399 | Subject: RE: Toyota Desert International Triathlon The forecasted high for race day has now dropped to 83-degrees. So, if we succeed at keeping the wind away then we will have close to ideal conditions at race time At my house (two miles from the race site) the wind has been fairly still this week, so it's looking promising! Tapering starts today - I'm getting REALLY excited about the race. |

Yanti and Faeron are coming along with me to cheerlead/sherpa (isn't that awesome?!). Definitely a possibility for Liz and I to do dinner after the swim on Saturday. (As long as we go someplace where there are options besides pizza or burgers.) We'd like to have a chance to meet folks before o-dark-thirty on Sunday. Whether it gets arranged here or we just meet up at the lake on Sat., we'll probably be open to it. ----------------- Todd D_M_S--as a local--may be able to give some guidance as far as interested folks getting together Sat. evening for dinner, but I thought I'd pass along what my best friend (whose mom and stepdad live in the area) suggested as possibilities, to see if it sparked any interest...here you go... Hi Todd & Liz. The restaurant that I was thinking of in La Quinta is called The Stuft Pizza Bar & Grill in Old Town La Quinta. The menu's quite diverse (not just pizza), lots of salads and appetizers, and sandwiches. I remember things being pretty good. I think it's a chain store type of restaurant. They have micro-brewed ales and beers and full bar too. There may be a wait to be seated, but the big screen TVs will keep you entertained. ----- Their website is .... http://stuftpizza.com/laquinta/index.html My mother and step-Dad suggested another place too, called The Crab Pot, if you're interested in seafood (in the Desert?). Casual atmosphere and bar. I've never been there, but they said it was good and it's in Old Town La Quinta also. As a New Englander, Liz may be the better judge of what they have to offer. My Mom and step-Dad are easy to please. Here's more info... http://www.palmspringslife.com/media/Palm-Springs-Life/Dine-Out/Gre... Reviews ---- http://www.palmspringsforum.com/Topic2960-7-1.aspx#bm3443 Overall, the Old Town section of the city is kind of nice (in a Disneyland sort of way). Southwestern and Spanish Colonial. Art Galleries, boutiques, and shops. I heard that the town actually started as a bedroom community (or less-delicately 'service quarters') for the workers that kept the exclusive La Quinta resort and golf course fed, cleaned, and watered. It's had a facelift and new money thrown into it. http://www.oldtownlaquinta.com/index.html |

Veteran 399 | Subject: RE: Toyota Desert International Triathlon Be aware that this weekend in PS is White Party Weekend. It's one of the biggest gay festivals in the country so there will be A LOT of people in town. If you can, I'd recommend cooking something at home, most restaurants will be packed. The activities probably won't reach out to La Quinta as much as other parts of PS, but it's still a generally busy weekend in the valley. Stuft Pizza is incredibly tasty, very good choice, but also very crowded. It's very popular with the post-golf crowd so its fills relatively early. If you want to eat early, like 4-ish, you should be good, after that, be prepared to wait. No, they do not take reservations. Crab Pot I do not have direct experience with but it is popular. Its still somewhat new, opened within the last 6 months, so a lot of people still visit it. I assume you're looking for pasta/carbs. I would recommend Marios. This place is popular with the post-Polo crowd (Indio has a ton of Polo fields and horsemen in general). Busy, but relatively quick to seat you. They're also located in a mini-mall with a grocery store and a drugstore in case you forgot anything and need last minute supplies. Marios 49906 Jefferson St Indio, CA 92201 mariositaliancafes.com |

Veteran 399 | Subject: RE: Toyota Desert International Triathlon Someone posted a really good weather site in the main forum. Palm Springs is on there, but sometimes Thermal makes for a better weather comparison to La Quinta. Here's the link: http://www.usairnet.com/cgi-bin/launch/code.cgi?Submit=Go&sta=KTRM&... The wind forecast is looking a little iffy now. The course is very "exposed", virtually no buildings for the majority of it. So, even 13mph might be a factor. We'll have to wait & see . . . |

My wife played the "native New Englander" card and it looks like we're going to eat at the Crab Pot tomorrow after swimming. We'd love for any interested parties to either A) join us or B)persuade us otherwise, but that's our "default" plan for now.. |

Having moved to SoCal from Boston, there is nothing on the west coast that comes close to a good old crab shack in Maine overlooking the harbor. We're staying with friends while we're in PS, and are planing ot eat at their place. Good luck to everyone this weekend. Looks like it's going to be a gorgeous day. |
