Awhile back, a story broke that a female runner had been assaulted and raped while running on local trails.    http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=105817&posts=8#M1252555

The local community went into an uproar and even had a Take Back the Trails 5K walk/run in support of this victim.

well.....after about 2 months of investigation, it's coming out that there was no assualt or rape.  Made up story.      http://www.bellinghamherald.com/102/story/383264.html

Sad that she went through with this fabrication....Just glad that nobody was falsely accused and spent time in the hokey......BUT!  It did generate alot of positive awareness and common sense for others when they go out on trails and stuff.

Moving along with life.......

...Ramsay said the woman “has significant needs.” Simon would not comment on the woman’s mental state. Police took the woman into protective custody Wednesday morning. That process, used when people are considered a danger to themselves or others, includes a mental health evaluation...

Very sad. Truth of the matter is that trails can be dangerous.

Out on the Silver Comet Trail last Saturday, I saw what must have been Jennifer Ewing's son and grandson standing along the makeshift cross memorial on the side of the trail where she was abducted. (http://www.wsbtv.com/news/9583095/detail.html)

I'd still like to spit some Beechnut in that dude's eye ...

Hope the good that came out of the false alarm is that something like Jennifer Ewings' fate is not seen up there.

It saddens me that whenever I see the "safety while riding/running" threads I usually think about how to avoid getting hit by a car, and the ladies always think about...something else.

But I don't think that faking an assault is at all helpful--I think overall it tends to trivialize and distract from the issue rather than truly raise awareness.

Oh, and if it turns out that the guy they suspect in the Jennifer Ewing case did do it, I hope the State of Georgia learns its lesson and fries the SOB this time.  Or at least removes the offending bits.

It works in reverse too, when someone blames someone's death on an assault on a run.

Just ask Gary Condit .......... Innocent

Ledford went to the Dallas Police Department at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday bleeding profusely from a wound in his genital area, investigators with the Dallas Police Department told Channel 2 Action News.

Police say Ledford claimed he was negotiating with a prostitute for sex when she bit him on his genitals.

Hope they get infected and fall off.

At first I thought this thread was going to be about me...and was going to tell you, you mis spelled my name...its woof... The trail I run on, has had a few attacks ( I actually think they happen further up the trail then were I run)...I am more afraid of scaring the women on the trail...then actually being attacked myself.  but it does have some very secluded areas...
