I will be doing my first tri in May, a sprint. The thought which occurs to me is that I will need to change into my cycling shorts after the swim leg; I have no desire to ride 20k on my bike in a soggy bathing suit. The rules of the organizers dictates that participants cannot be bare in the transition area so where do the triathletes change? Do you bring a bathrobe? Do they provide change rooms? The few tri's that I have seen on tv did not seem to have this!

'cannot be bare'? well, my transitions i felt the same way...i used the 'advanced-towel-wraparound-technique' where u put your towel on over your soggy drawers (wrap towel high around belly...get a big towel too) THEN pull the suit off and slip dry stuff on underneath.

if your good, the towel will keep all bare-ness hidden. practice several times!!!!

well, I don't know how it is in Canada, but here in the US public nudity is frowned on and can even be grounds for a DQ. You could use whatever facilities are provided to go and change in, but you'll add soooo much time to your transition. I would invest in some tri shorts, they are lighter than regular bike shorts and the pad is too. That means they dry quicker, usually by the time you get off the bike. I have some friends who rave about the DeSoto Power Shorts, and I hope to get a pair before my first race.

hope that helps.

The old towel around the middle will just add more time to my transition time and will probably fall off just before I get my shorts on. And, I wanted to get away from having to buy a pair of tri specific shorts for now, at least until I know that I am suited for tri's but I think that I will take the plunge and buy a pair.

I did my first few tris in bike shorts only. I have spandex bike shorts and act almost like a jammer swimsuit. No changing needed. I tri suit is a little nicer, but I have seen many people doing the bike short thing. Try swimming in you bike shorts next time. see how it feels.

I am headed for my first tri too. I have also been wonrdering the same thing.

After reading your post I wonder about taking a bath robe. Once you put the robe on and bend at the waist, you can slip suit off and shorts on and not really be bare, right? Of course, this might not be "cool".

Get a pair of Desoto Tri shorts and don't worry about changing. The pad is smaller and does not absorb water like the one in cycling shorts. I think you will be happy with this and it will be less to worry about.

I want to jump in on the tri-short boat. Totally helpful!! And I found (without to much shopping--not being a particular fan of THAT sport) a pair for under 30 dollars, which I thought to be pretty reasonable. You'll get a lot of use out of them, not just for the event but for all the training and BRicks and mini-tris (you know, running from the pool at your gym over to the treadmills and stationary bikes) you do in preparation.

I'm sure you'll become a total convert to multi-sport!! Welcome,

Dana

I love my Desoto tri-shorts. I have two pair. One I just use for racing and the other one I use any time I'm doing two of the disciplines back-to-back (i.e. biking to swim practice or doing bike-run bricks). They're awesome.

A speedo does not get very "soggy" and dries quickly. Being as I have a fair amount of padding for the bike naturally, I just towel off and slide the running shorts on for the bike and then am ready for the run also.

No, avid cyclists do not wear anything under the cycling shorts! Wearing something beneath them defeats the purpose of wearing them in the first place. They are made to be comfortable to offer padding in the area where it is needed and to not chaffe by having seems that are located away from contact areas.

As for wearing a speedo....hhhmmmmmmmmm...I think that would be a little to scary. No! the best bet is to buy a pair of tri specific shorts, Louis Garneau and Cervelo are available around here so I will take a look at them.

Speedo tri suit. it's a few years old now and I'd like to get myself a new DeSoto suit. That will be a nice reward for reaching a goal weight.

Desoto, no underwear (I blush), jogging bra in the water. Pull on 2nd jogging bra (yikes! very difficult on damp skin!), bike jersey and appropriate footwear (with socks, I'm afraid!!)

But I agree--wearing something under the trishorts just gives you another seam to deal with and potential chaffing. Keep it simple, keep it real, keep it real simple.

According to the guys at my local bike shop. The purpose for the padding in the bike shorts and tri shorts isn't so much for the cushioning but for the wicking away of moisture. By wearing something between your skin and the shorts you are defeating the paddings purpose. For those that do need something there though, they do make liners to wear under the shorts. They also have wicking properties. I had the same question when I bought my first pair of shorts.

So women... swim in the champion sports bra and desoto shorts? what about a regular speedo lycra sports bikini top? Do you all agree no full swim suit?

It's all very individual I think. What works well for me is a Tri suit (one piece) with jog bra under. I use the wetsuit over this combo, then in transition just take that off and stay in the other, pull a shirt over for the bike and run. But then again -- I'm a bit larger, and am not interested in baring my middriff (sp?) -- and my race mates probably appreciate that :-)

Sometimes I feel like *I* need a jogging bra. LOL What did George Castanza on Seinfeld call it? A "man-bra"?

I agree Ellen -- I think we would have a great time. Who knows -- maybe it will happen some day when I get the itch to do traveling-triathlons!!
