Subject: Pedal and cleat installation
Fedex just dropped off my Keo Look Classic Pedals and Cleats. I picked up the Lake Triathlon shoes. Now, how do I go about installing the new pedals and cleats on my new triathlon bike? Are there any decent tutorials out there for this?

thanks

You'll need grease and a pedal wrench to install the pedals.  Make surey ou install the right one on the right side, left on the left.   Note that they are not both installed by rotating in the same direction.    I believe that the right is clockwise, and the left is counterclockwise, but I ca't be held to that.  A quick google search should give the answer.  Be sure, you don't want to strip the cranks.

For cleats, you'll need an allen wrench  screwdriver.  At some point, you should get a fit so the cleats are in the correct position

The Keo cleats actually install with a screwdriver to the bottom of the shoe.  Pretty easy.  I've played with the positon on my own a bit.  If the outside of the foot got numb, I moved the cleat out a little more until it was comfortable.  Now I know the position that's good and use it for all my keo cleats.

Can I do this without a pedal wrench? I have an 83-piece craftsman tool set in front of me right now.

I think so. You need a metric hex-end stud and a breaker bar. The stud is 6mm or possibly 8mm. DO NOT force an SAE allen wrench! You'll kill it. You reach the socket on the pedal through the hole on the opposite side of the crankarm.

Pedal wrenches come in 2 varieties. For KEO, you simply need an Allen wrench of the right size and sufficient lever length to tighten the thread. Don't try your multi tool. It's not gonna be enough oomph.

This is the official pedal wrench you'd need for KEO. http://www.pedroscatalog.com/product.aspx?productID=6463026

As for setting the cleat position; you can get very close with some help.

1.) Put the cleats on the shoe, but don't tighten the screws fully. Install them, but leave 1-2 turns open.
2.) Go to a parking lot or empty area with a friend, your shoes, a helmet and your bike. Also bring a scratch awl, white out or a foil-colored marker (gold or silver)
3.) Put your shoes on, clip in and spin around the lot. Wiggle your feet around making sure the cleat moves on the shoe. After that, just spin easy and ride 3-5 min.
4.) When you stop, brake and glide to a stop and grab a light pole, your car or a good hand hold. Don't unclip!!!
5.) Point your toes down giving your friend access to the shoe bottom. Have your friend mark the cleat position on your shoe with the marking device you brought. Try to outline as much of the cleat as possible.
6.) Unclip, take the shoe off, slide the cleat to that marked position (after the marks dry).

You've put your foot in the least stressful spot by accomodating the "natural" foot position you should cycle at.

A pro fitting is better, but this will get you real close. If you have any pain afterwards, get a pro involved.

Thank god I bought the 10 piece multi-tool from nashbar. It has the 6mm hex, and I was able to tighten the pedals.
