Pre-race routine:

I made a deal with myself. I wanted to start the new year on a high note and set the tone for my year. I had plans to go out with friends to dinner, drink too much wine and basically wreak havoc on my body. I opted, instead, to be the DD.

Dinner was nice, but I was tired early. Back to my friends house where I tried to make my escape with my drunk charges soon after the ball dropped...There was a party going on next door at people I knew but wasn't in the mood to go over...*almost* made it to the car when they came out and saw me and dragged me into the party, leaving my drunk charges honking my horn and wondering where I went.

Very glad I went into the party. Got a chance to see some good friends...people I classify as "good people" which is a very rare thing for me to do.

Got my charges home about 1:30, I got home a little before 2...crawled into bed and promptly fell asleep.

Woke up, looked at the clock, curled up under the covers, had second thoughts, almost decided to wait til the gym opened and just hit the treadmill.....got angry at myself, started swearing, kicked off the covers and stomped to the dryer to get my workout clothes.

Event warmup:

put on mp3 player
put on Polar S625x foot pod
put on HRM strap
put on watch
put on sweatshirt
pull back hair
pee
drink water
go outside

Run
  • 60m 45s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt good. I've been doing base training on the treadmill for the last 2 months and I could feel it. My pace was smooth, my heart rate stayed down, I could actually talk while I ran if I wanted to...then again, I was running alone so that would look weird.
Post race
Warm down:

walked over to Starbucks for some post-race nectar of the gods....realized I only had $3 bucks and was *really* thirsty as well as needing caffeine....the debate started...hydration or caffeine...hydration or caffeine.....hydration won out so I bought the water.

Walking home it started to rain, to pour actually. At first I fought it but found it fitting so walked in the middle of the storm, head back, getting completely soaked to the bone and smiling into the rain.

Event comments:

This will become a yearly thing for me. Almost talked Brian and Lisa into joining me and with a little work think I'll be able to corral some others into the 2nd annual next year....

I had a PB with a 9:47 pace!!!! I BROKE A 10 MINUTE MILE!!! and I'm very excited about that.

Thanks!
A little bitter there wasn't better schwag, didn't even get a lousy t-shirt!...had to settle for a beer that afternoon since there were no t-shirts...which promptly put me to sleep on the couch....

Nancy, that was a fantastic job! I love your self discipline! One of the biggest reasons why I'm chasing a long term IM goal is for the self discipline I know it will require.

CA is a bit far for me to join in the 2nd Annual 10k, but maybe we can organize a virtual group race for all our BT friends next year.

Great start to your year!
Mike

Good work, Nancy!!! It would have been sooo much easier to not get up and go race.  I had a similar debate with myself yesterday when I had to get up and go race too!

You rock!!!
