Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:00 am loaded up the car and hit the road by 4 am. Got a little lost last year at this race so I wanted to give myself plenty of time to get there. Realized i forgot my aero bottle about half way there so I had to do without. Got a nice end spot in transition and relaxed until about 7:30 and put on the wetsuit.
Event warmup:

got in the water about 15 minutes before the start to get aclimated. They said the water was 68 degrees but it felt a lot colder than that.

big improvement over last year. Started in the 4th wave out of 5. Should have started in the 2nd or 3rd wave. Found a good set of feet until the 1st bouy but lost them at the turn and went a ways off course after the second bouy. Needed a set of tinted goggles since I was sighting directly into the sun.
What would you do differently?:

Start in an earlier wave
Use tinted goggles
Transition 1
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

Longe run or should I say walk up to my spot. got my top off on the way. think I had it up over my head just in time for the photographer :)
Bibjohn got stuck on the ankles again.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really just need more practice
Bike

Comments:

much better than last year. The hills didn't seem as hard as last year. A lot of people were riding to the left which made it hard to pass sometimes having to pass on the right or right on the center line. Didn't drink enough since I didn't have my aero bottle and i could feel some cramps coming on. Nice course just needs a better road surface.
What would you do differently?:

be more aggresive in passing. More practice riding in aero position. Not forget my aero bottle
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

shoes and helmet off socks and running shoes on put on hat number belt and garmin on the go
What would you do differently?:

learn to dismount with shoes on bike
Run
  • 36m 17s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Excellent run. Legs felt great coming off the bike. Could not get my heart rate down but was still able to keep up a strong pace. Decided just to concentrate on the next person and make it my goal to pass that person. Strategy worked good as I passed about 10 people and I almost never pass anyone on the run :) Took water at each aid station and a gel at 1 mile.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Good work, Joe!

You made improvements all around since last year's race!  I still remember snapping photos for you at the finish last year.

Keep up the good work!

Wow, that's a fantastic improvement over last year -- you made great time on the run and bike on that hilly course. Nice!
