Pre-race routine:

Got up early and started getting everything ready. Put the bike on the car because I was going to ride it after the race. Had a GU and put Accelerade in a bottle for the ride.

Rode over with Beth, checked in and started to get mentally ready.
Event warmup:

Went for a short run. 0.75 miles with some strides thrown in for good measure. Really tried to get the legs loosened up because they were still really tight and sore from the LTHR test on Thursday night.

Comments:

Just like most races, I took off too fast. Looked down about 0.5 miles in and I was going at about 6:30 pace. Oops, dial it back a bit. Slowed it down to about 7:30 pace and then ignored the watch for the next mile or so. Really wanted to try to go off of RPE and not HR or pace. Had a young man (probably about 11 or 12) that passed me early on, and I paced off of him, but he started to slow so I passed him. And then just kept the pace up.

I didn't look at my watch much. Checked my time at the 2 mile mark and it said about 14:30. Some quick math in my head and I knew I had a good pace going. So I ignored the Garmin again, and kept pushing. Rounded the last corner into the park and picked up the pace just a bit more. Legs were screaming at me and my heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest. Crossed the finish line with 23:05!

I think that even though the LTHR made my legs incredibly sore, it helped me mentally. I kept pushing. I kept going. And it paid off. I was shooting for a sub 8:00 pace. I did a 7:38 pace! WOOT!!!!

Huh, I just noticed that they shortened the race. The Garmin said only 3.02. Still, either way, I was sub 8:00! And that's what counts!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not do a LTHR test three days before?
Post race
Warm down:

Got some food and walked around and waited for Jay. He finished and talked to him for a minute or two. Then Beth and I left early and I hopped on the bike and went for 75 minute ride. Really helped the legs chill out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not do a LTHR test three days before? :)

Event comments:

Good little local 5k. First annual since they changed it from the 4 mile Re-run that it used to be.
