Total Time = 1h 15m 59s
Overall Rank = 10/120
Age Group = MS
Age Group Rank = 6/45
Pre-race routine:

Wore: Skin Suit and Arm Warmers over leggings and short sleeve base layer.
Event warmup:

10 mins gentle run + short sprint to raise hr. Not enough stretching.

Comments:

Hard, very hard. I tried my "concentrate and relax" mantra while hanging onto the back of Graham Coull, who's running has obviously improved since last race. I hung in till halfway, but I let a gap open through the trees, and could not close it - finished maybe 10s down on GC. Still pretty pleased though
What would you do differently?:

I backed off a little as T1 came into view - due to lack of concentration...
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

Transition area was wet and muddy, so I didn't leave shoes in pedals - which worked better this time. Got a good slot for bike, but it had blown over in wind though...

Comments:

Caught 20 riders, tailwind on way out made it really fast. Disk handled fine in really windy conditions. I only had to come off tri bars on one 55kph descent with cross winds, but so did everyone else. Headwind on hill made it really tough on the way back - which just meant I caught people faster... Had a great time on bike today - the harder the bike course the better! I was up in 3rd place overall by the end of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Cramp! Both calves cramped really badly as I bent down to change shoes - that hurt a lot...
What would you do differently?:

Maybe spin a lighter gear in approach to T2, but uphill approach makes this difficult.

Comments:

Oh my god... That was very, very hard. Coming out of T2 I was cramping really badly in my calves, and my quads were very, very heavy. I was reduced to an almost walk within about 100 metres - losing two places straight away. I wanted to push myself to the point were I could feel the pace hurting, but I physically could not get my legs to move that fast. John, then Alan passed me on the first loop, as did another two runners. Desperate to hold onto a top ten place I was in 9th when I heard two runners apporaching me in the last 500m. I got on the shoulder of the first one as he passed, then attempted to raise a sprint to get back past him. He (Davie Millar) sprinted faster, so I lost 9th place, but the 11th place man couldn't keep up, so I kept 10th!
What would you do differently?:

Brick training...

Event comments:

I was never going to repeat the podium finish from the last race with the second run, but I guess I hoped I could do a little better on that second run.

Having said that, 1st run was good, and bike was superb, so I have to be pretty happy with a top-10 finish.

Sounds like it was a tough race.

Is it the same course for Monikie 1, 2 and 3?

Hi Dave.

Not quite the same course:

Race 1 and Race 2 - 4k Run/20k Bike
Race 3 - 4k Run/20k Bike/4k Run
Race 4 - 4k Run/40k Bike/4k Run

The 4k runs were all supposed to be the same, but due to maintenance within the country park, the 4k runs in races 1 and 2 were shortened - which was nice.

As a poor runner, but a better cyclist, races 1 and 2 suited me very well, wheras Race 3 was a bit harder (went from 3rd to 10th on the last run). Race 4 should be, er interesting.

The bike in Race 4 is two laps of the same course as previously, which means I've got the first lap to catch the fast runners in front of me (hopefully including John and Alan), then the second lap to gain enought time to be able to hold them off on the run (reckon I'll need at least 2 minutes gap of those two).

See you tomorrow night for a run?

Cheers, Andy
