Swim
Comments: 250m swim, lol. I really didn't want to wear a wetsuit for only 4-5 minutes of swimming. The start was a time trial every 3 seconds. I did really well my first 50-60m. You had to wade about 15m out before you could begin dolphin diving. I was able to catch about 10 people in the first minute then picked up the pace. Since it was time trial and a short course it was one big draft. The swim time is much slower than expected. You had to wade out and wade back in. Plus the swim time includes the long run to transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. It was over about the same time it started. Transition 1
Comments: Not much to say here. I was the third from the last rack so I had to run the entire transition to get to my bike. I felt like I got the wetsuit off quickly and got out of there and a good pace. What would you do differently?: Nothing much. It was a good transition Bike
Comments: It was REALLY difficult to not go out and HAMMER this short course. I mean, the winner of this race averaged 30+ mph. Ugh. Instead, I wanted to be aggressive and feel a little pain but keep things under control. The hill was a good climb and the field spread out at this point. It was still raining and the roads were wet so I did not attack the winding downhill. It was fun to watch those who did. Bike time includes the run TO transition (length of t2). What would you do differently?: Get more aggressive on descents. Transition 2
Comments: I got my feet out of the shoes but I didn't try to do a flying dismount. I ran well with the bike and easily found my rack, put on my socks and running shoes and was gone What would you do differently?: jump off the bike. Run
Comments: Not much to say here. I wanted to run a 7:30. That was fine with me. There were some FAST runners. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Grabbed a bottle of water and found Jess to do some light stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. My overall race was within 6s of what I predicted. I executed my plan perfectly. Event comments: This was just the warmup to a LONG weekend. It was too short for you to get into any real rhythm and a good opportunity to scout the competition. Jess and I left Nashville around 8 am for Portsmouth. The drive ended up being a bigger pain that we anticipated. We probably arrived around 3:30 had time to register and get set up. My goal was to stay hydrated and nourished on the way up there so that before the race I could just pop a gel.
Lots of stretching. Since it was a short race I just did a little spinning and a few sprints to get the blood flowing.
It started raining about 10 minutes before the race began.
