Hi Everyone!
I'm getting excited about the race... this is my first tri of the season.  Has anyone done the swim before?  I hear it is really shallow.  Any tips?

I'm racing in this one also! This will be my first Triathlon to bring me into Triathletism!

I've read through a few race reports, looks like it's really only 100-200 yards of swimming, I guess the rest is really shallow. I still don't see how water running/dolphining would be faster than swimming, anybody care to explain which is better/faster?

I did this one a few years ago. Yes the swim is real short. They call it a lake, but it is basically an outdoor pool. There is maybe 100 yards where you have to actually swim (around diving well) run/ walking in the shallow is actually faster than swimming, however it takes a lot more energy than swimming. So while walking is tempting, swimming will help in the other legs. However, usually you won't swim until it gets over your knees. The bike and run course are pretty flat and can make for some quick times. Good luck!

I am registered. First race of the season and looking forward to gettingthe season kicked off!

Bummer about the short swim. Longer the better as far as I'm concerned. I happey to hear that the run is flat. That always helps the bigger guys!

See you there!

I think I will force myself to swim as much of it as I can because I need to save my legs for the run.  I have never attempted a 10K after 25 miles on the bike... should be interesting!

I swam there in high school in the late '80s and remember it being fairly shallow with the deepest part about 20 feet out from the diving island.  I know it's a loop around the island but to make the "400 yds" they probably have to keep in the shallower part (thus making the course wider).  I also remember the water having a greenish/light brown color because it's basically a sandy pool.  I've heard from the organizer the water should be about 70-75 degrees depending on the amount of sun and warm weather.  I'm still debating on wearing the wetsuit.

I'm in on the GB Tri as well and looking forward to it.  I did a bike/run brick last weekend on the course: the bike course (new short one) is flat with a couple of very small hills that you can almost conquer by momentum.  There is no shoulder on Scheurer Rd, loose gravel on Orlando and some potholes and cracked asphalt on the first mile or so on Packerland.  There was also a 15-20' patch of unpaved road repair work on Glory.  That's my road report for today!

The run is also flat - except for the slight uptick to get into the park.

So it looks like there might be thunderstorms. Since I'm new to this, what weather will cause a cancellation of a race? I don't wanna spend the $ for a hotel and everything just to find out that a race won't happen because of lightning and/or thunder. I'm aware that rain alone won't cancel it, but what would? And how soon do they usually call it off?

I don't know specifically about the RD for this race, but generally if there is lightning, they will call the race.  At Pleasant Prairie last year, we were right down to the wire...it's stormed horribly the night before and was still lightning and thundering at 5 am when most of us got there.  They kept a close eye on the weather and decided about 15 minutes before race time that it would be a go.  Turned out to be a great day for racing, but that's sometimes how close they come to calling things.

I agree with Peggy. It is usually a game-time decision. A few years ago a storm moved through right before the start of Tri-ing for Children. They delayed the race for nearly two hours, but the weather cleared (mostly) and the race went on. Just be prepared. Bring plastic bags to cover things like your shoes and socks. I thought Sunday's T-storms are supposed to be mostly in the afternoon though.

Hey everyone,

Check you e-mail... they just announced a bottle exchange on the bike around the halfway point with gatorade and water.   That makes me happy!
