Would riding on this bridge scare you?

traffic I presume... plus why ride next to the edge if you don't have to!

The bridge with the grated metal road (with the peeps in the middle ) was near Preston, Iowa.  That's where we started the tour.  The other bridge with the low cement rails... was heading into Dubuque, Iowa.. end of the tour... 70 miles later.  Then we stayed at Clark College overnight Sat and headed back, but had no bridges.  Good thing cause the weather was awful on Sun... can't imagine crossing those in pounding rain and 50mph winds!

did they ride this past weekend?  curious what they did and how they handled Sunday in the storm?

Yeah - I haven't talked to either of them yet, cause I was going to ask the same question.  They are both outstanding cyclists. 

HOLY COW!!!!   I thought that first picture looked familiar.  You're coming into Dubuque from the Wisconsin side.  I grew up in Dubuque, we used to go down near that bridge (the lock and dam is just north of there) to go fishing as kids all the time.

In fact, did you stop off at the Greyhound Park.   You can see the top of the sign in the picture.

On the bright side, you're much safer with a little wind going over that bridge compared with the Illinois side bridge.

edit : also to note - the Norwegians settled the northern and more agragrian parts of the state - Dubuque is an Irish / German mix...  (great Drinking town! pints and steins!)

yes, we were on the WI side at that point, I forgot that.  I got turned around from being in Iowa, IL, and WI all within 70 miles, LOL!!  That was my first time in Dubuque and on that bridge, so it was cool.  I also heard later about the lock and the dam... dang, had I known, I would have biked down later to check it out... but didn't.

You can't get me to drive over a bridge, much less ride. With much trepidation I will allow myself to be a passenger over a bridge so that the poor driver doesn't have to take, like, a 30-mile detour to avoid it (although I would, myself).

this made me laugh because in this case, the bridge is over the Mississippi river.  To avoid the river, your detour would have been just North of Minneapolis. (with noting that you can't go south to avoid the river)
