Pre-race routine:

Woke up early and could not sleep so after staring at the clock for a few hours I got up about 04:00 and ate a bowl of cereal. Got the bikes loaded on the bike rack and lubed chains. Woke up Kylie about 5:15 and left the house about 5:30. Set up transition, picked up chip, and talked with BT'ers for a bit. Talked to Bonnie, Joe and Jim and then headed down to the swim start. My training for this race consisted of 1 swim, 2 rides, and 2 runs in the 2 weeks leading up to the race with the previous 6ish months being void of anything that could be considered training!
Event warmup:

Yeah right! The swim was my warm up!
Swim
  • 16m 53s
  • 549 meters
  • 03m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wow. Not too bad, just slow. Never had a hard time, swam pretty easy. I started out toward the back of the pack and pretty much stayed there. No problems sighting, contact was not too bad.
What would you do differently?:

train.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

I think I dozed off for a bit here. Slowest transition ever? Possibly.
What would you do differently?:

Move a bit faster.
Bike
  • 33m 13s
  • 9 miles
  • 16.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Started off stong passing quite a few right at the start. Speeds were in the 19-20 range. Pretty uneventful until we hit Hwy 6 and there was some headwind. After that I started slowing down and was unable to keep the speed up. I could have pushed a little harder but wanted to have some legs left for the run.
What would you do differently?:

train.
Transition 2
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

Dozed off again here. Had a little trouble getting my socks on since my feet were still wet.
What would you do differently?:

train.
Run
  • 34m 55s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Run...not so much. Started off OK, felt a little nausea coming off the bike but felt better than I thought. Started off with a slow run. Hit 6 minutes and had a BAD cramp so I decided to walk for a minute. After my short walk things were feeling a lot better. At this point I decided that sounded like a great plan, run 6, walk 1. It was nice since I have done this race before I remembered the course well and the location of the aid stations. Planned my walk breaks well with the aid stations and just kept moving. Played leap frog with 2 others for the whole run but ended up beating both of them. At the end I saw the cheering section and gutted it out for a stong sprint to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

train.
Post race
Warm down:

Was trying to walk to cool down and the girl had to chase me to get my chip back. Searched and searched and finally found the water and gulped down a few. Hung around for a long time for the awards ceremony because I placed...yeah right. Kylie and her sisters did a relay and got 1st in the female relays.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training.

Event comments:

This is a pretty nice local race. This was my 2nd year to do it and will definitely come back again. Well organized and supported. Would reccomend it for sure.
