Davenport, Iowa
United States
72F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 33m 49s
Overall Rank = 248/445
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 34/41
Pre-race routine:

I woke up and had a couple eggs and half an english muffin a few hours before the scheduled start of the race. I was pretty relaxed and got out to the the transition area an hour and a half before the scheduled start.
Event warmup:

I got the wetsuit on and just did a quick 5 minute warm-up and then waited for the start of the race.
Swim
  • 11m 13s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Running start with 3 second delay between athletes. The swim start was ok, but as swim progressed I became increasingly tired and felt restricted with the wetsuit. Timewise the swim went ok, but I was pretty fatigued. I really need to work in sighting because I didn't really have a good technique in doing so. I managed to get by couple of people but need to concentrate and continue to swim if I cause contact with another swimmer.
What would you do differently?:

Need to relax a bit and get some more training with open water swimming and get a bit more used to the wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

Once I got out of the water it was a quick run up the beach and up a steap little hill to the kiddie pool to wash the feet off. I managed to find my bike ok. The transition went ok, but had a bit of a hard time getting the suit off the heels once I got to my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice getting the wetsuit off a few times before races.
Bike
  • 51m 3s
  • 15 miles
  • 17.63 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike portion felt pretty good and I definitely feel stronger on the bike than last year. I road in the aero position for most of the race and was comfortable the entire time. I still need to work on riding more to get my endurance and speed up.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't really do anything differently. I just need to ride more!
Transition 2
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

I couldn't find my spot on the rack and had a problem getting my running shoe on. The bottom insole was wet and kept slipping forward when I went to put my foot in so I had to repeatedly try to get the shoe on.
What would you do differently?:

Remember where my rack spot is!
Run
  • 26m 43s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

After getting off the bike and starting the run I had a hard time catching my breath. I could tell my heart rate was way up and it took a good mile before I really started to relax and run. The last mile I felt strong and probably could have pushed the middle of the run a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much of a warm down other than drinking a bottle of water and walking around. I knocked 6 minutes off of last years time so I'm happy with that. Next year sub 1:30.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to work on brick bike to run sequence a bit more.

Event comments:

This race is really well run and I'll be racing in it next year.

Way to go on the race! We finished less than a minute apart...with the exact same swim time. I wonder how close you, Crowny, and I were at the start. This was my first OWS and I understand what you mean by continuing to swim if you make contact with another swimmer. That was a big surprise for me. Good luck with your races this summer. You're doing the race in DeWitt also, right?

Thanks! I did notice that we were all pretty close in time. I hit the water about 10 minutes after the first swimmer.

Yes, I'll be doing the DeWitt race. Hopefully I won't be crushed on the bike with the wind like last year.

Do you know of anywhere to do open water training?

Unfortunately not...other than West Lake. And I don't want to have to pay $3/trip to go swim out there. If you find anywhere, please let me know.

Well done.  And you are approaching everything just right.

The only way to get better at OWS is to do more of them.  I have the same issue.  It is only slightly better on a wave start, but not much.

And the only way to get better on the bike is T.I.T.S.  (Time in the saddle)

Keep it up and hope to see you at it next year.  Or maybe some other races around Iowa this year.  Haven't decided on the Cy-Man or the TriHawk one yet.
