I imagine I could possibly hit one out of ten within a 1/2 hour of getting some intensive one on one training.

Keying on the word "hit", not "touch" - I'd take you up on that bet.

IMO this is about the stupidiest study I have seen and there is no way to say who the best is.  Of course people on this site will think a triathlete is the best.  But do you honestly believe that Macca could go run on an NFL football field?  I am pretty sure Ladamien could lug his way through a tri.

I just think trying to argue this is dumb.

The Decathlete won fair and square in my eyes and even before looking at the list I was thinking decathlete. I see soccer players and boxers legitimately in the top ten but not baseball or football players.

This whole debate is compairing apples and oranges.  There are WAAAAAAYYYYYY too many variables to even begin this agument.  Track and field and swimming are really the only sports that can be measured with some accuracy.  The variables are limited to wind and track surface for t&F and design of the pool for swimming.  Basketball, baseball, soccer, boxing, tennis, football, etc have nothing but variables minus the size of the field.  Even triathletes would all have to race on the same course every race to get a reasonable measurement.

This argument is going nowhere.....so let's all get back to sweating our arses off for the next race!

Cheers!

Why a boxer?  I can see they'd have reflexes, coordination and strength...
Just curious...

kagoscuba - 2008-06-20 10:38 AM Baseball?  Please.  Standing around for hours on end does not make it athletic.

Actually hitting a baseball is considered one of the more difficult athletic endeavours.

boxers require a lot of endurance; if you want to see something athletically impressive.  Watch a lightweight fight.  Those guys pound on each other for 36 minutes of high octane output.  It's not so much what the boxer does in the ring that makes them an athlete.  It's the training that puts them in a position to get in the ring and perform at a high level that makes them an athlete.  Although, the work in the ring is considerable as well.

Where are the bowlers in this list? I'd like to see one of those so-called "athletes" drink two pitchers of beer, eat a full plate of onion rings and still bowl a 200 game without throwing up more than once. Now THAT is multi-dimensional!

There training employs lots of endurance and speed work of many different types along with the obvious traits that you listed.

Based on the criteria seems like a triathlete could have broken the top ten. Comments? They sight cycling and marothoning as to "one dimmensional" but then have a boxer and baseball player on the top ten. I wonder what there definition of "one dimmenstional is"? Interesting none the less. Discuss.

Yeah, I'm trying to figure out what is one dimensional about the TdF?  You need strength to get up those nasty climbs, speed in the TT, and endurance just to be able to survive for three weeks.  I'm sure if Lance was still riding, cycling wouldn't have been so one dimensional.

It's obvious they took the easy route.  Pick the best decathlete first, then it's a popularity contest.  Ronaldinho, A-Rod, and Crosby aren't even the most athletic in their sport.  Mayweather is retired, and I might even say Nadal is more athletic the Federer.

I always love your posts Sesh.  You almost always write exactly what I was thinking but with much more clarity and flavor.

I disagree with the hate on baseball and "stick and ball" sports.  It's just silly they took the easy route.  There are many very athletic baseball players (Carl Crawford).  I'm actually surprised these clowns didn't put Tiger in there.

The problem with these lists is that it's based somewhat, if not entirely, on popularity. The better question would be what sport would produce the best all-around athlete. To really turn this into a mind candy question, i.e., one that's fun to discuss but would never happen in our universe, is, if you had to send one type of athlete back in time to caveman days, which athlete would have the greatest chance of survival? Gymnasts and MMA fighters would be up there. Sprinters would make it because they could run away from danger, but marathoners would probably struggle because they lack overall body strength.

So there you go.  It'd be impossible to make a list everyone agrees on.  I am glad to see a decathlete get the nod though, because that actually is an impressive event to excel in.  Not to say any other event is less impressive, but the wide range of skills a decathlete has is noteworthy.
