Pre-race routine:

Got up and ate breakfast, peanut butter on a bagel with a banana & a cup of coffee.
Event warmup:

No warmup. I keep saying I should start warming up but I never do. Maybe next race.
Swim
  • 10m 31s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I actually tried to draft at one point but that person was way too fast and comfortable in the water for me. My goal was to still just get out of the water :-)
What would you do differently?:

um...Swim freestyle the entire way. I would probably warm up in the water next time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

I'm happy with my T1 transition. I'll have to go online and check other people's T1 times to compare.
What would you do differently?:

I was pretty efficient in transition I thought. I didn't forget anything and moved quickly. There was a person in front of me while I was trying to get to where you could mount your bike. She was preventing me from moving quickly there. It was rather annoying. Finally the guys monitoring said "pick it up" and she started to move a little faster. I couldn't get around her.
Bike
  • 36m 32s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.71 mile/hr
Comments:

The road surface was bumpy at times but not too bad. I felt good on this course. I was trying to spin in an easy gear for a lot of it. I'm not sure why I was doing that. I can only assume I was thinking about saving my legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

I don't know what I was doing in T2. I was dillydallying, I guess. I know I had some issues with thinking about putting on a shirt. I ended up deciding against it. Perhaps I spent too much time doing that. I'll have to work on t2.
What would you do differently?:

move a little quicker and maybe be a bit more organized.
Run
  • 27m 4s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

This run sucked horribly. On a positive note, my legs felt great from my first step. My hamstring was a little tight but that worked itself out quicker than it ever had before. I didn't have that horrible feeling after coming off the bike, which maybe means my spinning a little easier on the bike helped out a little. Unfortunately, about 5 f'ing minutes into the run I had the 2nd worse cramp I ever had. I don't think I ever wanted to walk to bad in my life. I ended up sucking it up but I really wanted to stop.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. If I didn't have the cramp I think I could have pushed it much harder. I'll have to investigate side stitches and their causes ;-) perhaps it was the horrible baked ziti I had the night before.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and ate a bagel. We waited for Rusty to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my side stitch and my anxiety in the water.

Event comments:

I enjoyed this race. I did the duathlon last year. It's a nice area and the folks that run it are nice and know what they're doing.

I know this isn't lightening fast and it's also slower than my pool time but this is MUCH faster than my time coming out of the water for my last sprint last year. I have some serious open water swimming issues. I also swam freestyle to the first bouy and from the last bouy in. I only went to my backstroke for the middle section. There is some serious improvement there, too.

Very nice race, good luck figuring out the side stitches.  You really kicked butt on the bike.
