I plan on swimming 2 out of 3 days..probably Thursday and either Friday or Saturday. I need more time in the lake to feel more comfortable.

I think a group BT get together Monday would rock.  One Thursday before the race would be fun as well.

..I think there's a good reason why this is one of the only places in town that has rooms available.  We stayed at the the Lake Placid Summit Hotel, at the end of the main drag on the right & I have to say, for the cost, the room was a decent deal...although you're a bit far from the action of race day..if you're like us, you'll find yourself walking back & forth from one end to the other all week anyway.

My plan is to swim Thursday night after I get in and either Friday or Saturday morning. I will probably do just one loop each day. Friday or Saturday I will probably bike the first few miles of the course and run the first 1/2 mile as well just to make sure I know where I am going.

Since this seems to be the official LP discussion thread at the moment (plus the one in the New York section ), let me point out that Aaron has started the LP participant and goal thread here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=120702&posts=1&start=1

Between seeing that and seeing the athlete guide, this is getting pretty real .

Just meet me in the parking lot with a Moose Island Ale from the LP Pub and Brewery.  Actually, since the LP Pub is only about .2 miles from the finish, maybe we could arrange to have someone hand me one on the second loop?

You're in luck, my kids have practiced bottle hand-ups on the drive-way

For the record, I like the LP Pub's UBU (7% alcohol, just don't let Cappy have 2 he gets kinda loopy

Monday evening would be a great time to hook up! Maybe we can post some of the times that we will be swimming and we can meet each other earlier in the wk too. KathyG and I are going to try to swim together on Thursday.
Oh man! This is getting WAY too real! Gulp!

My LP training weekend is coming in a few days... Here is how it looks (if anyone cares):

Friday: Drive to LP from PA. Run 1 hour.

Saturday: Swim 1 loop with my coach and ride the course with coach (both loops)

Sunday: Swim 2 loops, ride 1 loop (56 miles) run one loop (13.1 miles)

Going to be freakin' FUN!!!

Hey Fred!

I have a bright yellow and black QR Caliente. I know I know...tons of them around... It's hard to do a self description when we are all dressed so similarly. I'll be wearing white framed sunglasses, I am fairly tan, about 5'6"... NONE of that sets me apart in any way! lol But if you happen to pass a female on a Caliente on Saturday, give a shout out!

Yup, this is getting super real! I was sort of ho hum about it up until my weekend up on on 6/14. Now...woo hoo!!!

My wife, daughter and I are heading up on Wednesday, arriving sometime in the late afternoon (wife's got a Target detour planned). On Thursday we're hooking up with some friends from upstate NY that we haven't seen in 5+ years and taking our kids to the North Pole, but I'd love to meet the rest of the BT folks! It would be so much fun to recognize each other during the race.

My wife, son, daughter and I are heading up on Tuesday, probably getting in late in teh afternoon.  I'll probably swim Wednesday and Friday and some short biking and running in on Wednesday and Thursday.  If anyone is going to be up there early and would like to train together just let me know.

Getting so close now that I can taste it.

At registration on Thursday or Friday, there will be a table set up to buy additional welcome dinner or award banquet tickets.

Is the Friday night welcome dinner something I can take the wife and two small children?  I'd like to involve the family as much as I can - without driving them nuts.  Can anyone recommend any good family friendly restaurants in the area?  Any cool activities - other than watching the race?

As you may have noticed, the trip to Lake Placid is not just about me.  The way my training is going, I try not to think about the race too much...

I'm in the same boat trying to think of things for my wife and daughter (3 1/2) to do while we're out there. Off the top of my head, there is:

-North Pole (visit to Santa's workshop, toy factory, reindeer, etc.)
-Pirate's Cove mini put golf
-Mirror lake beach
-Shopping/walking around, there's a couple of kid's stores
-Ben & Jerry's

As for restaurants, all the restaurants there are family friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to take my little one to any of them.

The dinner is fun and motivational - my wife enjoyed it and said it almost made her want to do an ironman some day (but not quite ), but the tickets are fairly pricey for what you get (pretty basic pasta dinner, nothing to write home about).

As Caius said, all the restaurants will be fine with kids. Even the LP Pub and Brewery serves kids' stuff - you can order s'mores for dessert which they serve up on a platter with a little sterno flame in the middle for roasting your marshmallows.

The olympic venues are pretty cool to check out, depending on the ages of your kids - there are often hockey teams and figure skaters practicing and competing in the arena right next to the olympic oval.  You can also go out to the ski jump venue and watch them doing summer practices (landing in a pool).
