Subject: carrying water on 60+ min runs?
This weekend will be my first ever 60 minute run, and I've been really enjoying my long runs, I look forward to them all week. In what passes for winter around here, there's not much need for water on shorter runs, but I find myself wanting some water after about 45 minutes, and in the summer I will definitely need hydration on longer runs outdoors because it gets HOT.

How do you carry water on a run and how much do you carry? I just bought a runner's waist pack thingy to put cell phone and ID in (the pack is designed for no bounce, like the fuel belts), so I can clip stuff to the belt of that I suppose, but am not keen on the idea of holding a 20 oz bottle in my hand for an hour....do you just get used to it? Do you take a fuel belt (isn't that just for gels?)? Am I just being lame wanting water on such a short run?

I'm so ignorant. *sigh* Thanks for any light shed

Fuel belt works great for carrying water. I have the four-bottle model and love it, even has a little pouch for you to put the cell phone, etc. You can buy bigger bottles if the stock ones are too small. One of the best-designed running accessories ever.

Even on my longer runs, I run eight mile or shorter loops, so I'm back at my start before the water runs out.

What I do is set out a water bottle in a centralized location to where I can run by it every 20-30 min. I just can't bring myself to wear a fuel belt or camelback. During runs where I am doing a long out and back, I'll sometimes drive out and set out water for myself. Occasionally, I might carry my water bottle in my hand for a couple of miles, but that's about all I can take. On my long runs in my marathon training I will take water every 20-30 minutes and then some type of gu about every 6 miles. I have heard someone suggest setting a waterbottle at an intersection and running 10-15 minutes out and back in each direction so that you can always come back to your water and run in a different location each time.

Have you tried the fuelbelt, gina? I was like you, hated the idea of a camelback or water bottle, until I tried the fuelbelt. No sloshing, hardly any feel to it at all.

I used to plan my route the day before and get up and place water bottles along the route so that I would not have to carry them... I hated trying to carry anything while I am running for a long period of time.

I haven't tried it, but have heard good things. Perhaps it is high time I tried it. Especially since I want to do an Ironman next year...I'll be putting in some mileage.

Good grief, get a Fuel Belt!  That way, you can plan your route as you run.  I live in a subdivision with about 1000 different possibilities for a run route, so based on how I'm feeling and how long (time) I have to run, I can adjust all the way through, and you know what?  Every thing I need is right there with me!

Go with the fuel belt you will not be disappointed. I use mine on any run over 45min and in the 1/2 IM races. The races provide their sport drink (ex Gatorade) at the stations. However my stomach is much happier if I give it what I train with (Accelerade). Trust me the last thing that you want after 5 hours is to upset your stomach with Gatorade if that is not what your body is used to.

Another vote for the Fuel Belt. I got the 6 bottle model and have tried it a couple of times. I haven't carried all 6 bottles yet, but it works great with 4 and it seems like it would work fine with 6. Now I'm kicking myself for not buying it earlier. I carried a 24-oz. bottle on all of my long runs last fall and that was very annoying.

I use this to keep me hydrated because it's VERY customizable (moreso than the fuel belt), which suits me for runs from 1 hour to 3 hours.

I asked this very question 3-4 weeks ago and have only tried one thing so far...the cheapest I might add.

I carry a bike water bottle (tall) the whole 2 hours that I run. I just about finish it all after the 2 hours. What are those, 28 oz.? So you might need something like 15 oz. for an hour run...but it all depends on the person too. I guess I wouldn't take less than 20 oz. for 60 min to be safe. At this rate you could drink 5oz every 15 min or 1.5-2 miles, which almost seems like a lot to me but "IT'S SAFE".

I second Chucky's choice, it's definitely the cheapest version (except just a bottle) and I felt during runs up to 2 hours that the bottle didn't bother me, the grip thing held it pretty well. I've also used a waist mounted camelback and like that too. Haven't run with a back-mounted camelback but think that would work well too. Probably wouldn't feel very comfortable in the hot weather though.

Hey Steve, have you tried a fuel belt and that other one (sorry, don't remember the name)? Just curious if you could give us a comparison.

I just carry a bottle IF i need to have water.  Its good training for the biceps and it'll get lighter as I run.  Besides, it'll force you to drink more which is good.

Then again,  I've gone for 2hr+ runs without water....so....don't take my word for it...

I run with a camelback-type hydration pack . It has a waist and chest strap, so I can cinch it up to avoid bouncing.

The nice thing is I can carry other stuff like food with me.

I never like to run carrying something. I know it's stupid, but if I trip and fall, for some reason I have to protect whatever it is that's in my hands. So instead of using my hands to help me roll and minimize the damage, I usually face plant. I know it's just a water bottle.

I use the Fuel belt with 2 10oz bottles.

Camelbak makes a waist pack that DH use on our runs. Don't know what we'd do without it. There are also slots to stick hammer gel packs in the belt. It has worked great for us... no jiggling around either.

I posted a rather lengthy review of the 4-bottle fuel belt on this thread:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

For a 1 hour run the 2-bottle fuel belt would be enough - or you could use the 4-bottle belt and only carry 2 bottles.

The camelbacks were much less comfortable, to me at least, and I didn't like the sloshing around or the feel of carrying a backpack. I hardly notice the fuel belt.

I've been using a camelbak mule for the past 8 years.  Never bothered me, and has room for anything I could possibly need.

Thanks for the good review Eric. You mentioned you talked w/customer service about the stinky caps. Did you ask them about your troubles fitting the gel flask holder on the belt? Also, do you think you would prefer the 6-flask model with smaller flasks or the 4-flask model with larger flasks (roughly same fluid capacity)?
