Total Time = 2h 30m 54s
Overall Rank = 158/917
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 26/126
Pre-race routine:

Rode and ran for about 30 min and 15 min respectively the day before. Work up at 5 am and ate oatmeal and a cup of joe. Rode bike to transition and chatted with friends.
Event warmup:

No swimming allowed so I tried to stretch out my shoulders on my own. Lots of body stretching as this was a timed start so it went slow if you were further back.
Swim
  • 22m 5s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

I like the straight shot. I accidentally put in the wrong time by a factor of 2 so I had a lot of passing to do. It was pretty easy to accomplish as it was a straight shot but pretty wide open. Easy to navigate off of left side (ie. relative to shore).
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

This was a long transition as you had to climb a series of stairs, then run through their expo area, across street to big transition area. So the commute took a while. I still have a problem with my speed suit zipper sticking after a swim. I was able to get it down enough to get out.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 52s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Clearly the bike is my weakest on a relative basis and where I need to focus. I tend to get passed by stronger riders on the climbs but pass them back on descents. I really need to work on my hill climbing. It began to rain on the return portion of the race. When I say rain, I mean downpour. At one point, I was doing 41 miles per hour in a heavy big drop rain that you could barely open your eyes to watch the road. I guess you die at 20 mph or 40 mph so go for it.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

This actually wasn't too bad of a transition given that I have taken the same amount of time in much smaller transitions. I will say that the next time someone wants to talk to a friend cheering them on in the entry shoot, I will push them into next week.
What would you do differently?:

not much. Maybe cover my stuff so it wont be fully soaked.
Run
  • 48m 35s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

NOt bad although I want to get to a 7:00 to 7;10 pace for Portland.
What would you do differently?:

Push the pace a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch, have the provided beer(s)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the rain may have held me back. Lack of training on bike and running.

Event comments:

This is a fun race that has some good challenge to it. It is really well attended and the post race is great (ok they offered beer). Not only that, this race is full of good karma folks. When I came down the final hill to the finish, I was going full on kenyan style. I lost my glasses out of my tri pocket at some point on the sprint, but didn't notice until about 10 minutes after I finished. I looked around but no real luck. I started to walk the course when a volunteer found me and gave me the glasses I dropped was up the course. She came all the way down, tracked me down and gave them back to me. I hope that she gets an awesome karma prize over the next week. She deserves it!

My goal was to qualify for the AG Nationals. I needed top 33% in AG for this race. I got it so I am very happy. Portland, here I come.

I am not sure where my pace was that skewed this from 7.4 to 7.8 but I guess I missed something on my watch. I was able to keep myself at around Z3.5 which was good. I jacked it up at the end when I came like a scalded rabbit to the finish line.
Course: Hill and stairs in first mile, then flat along waterfront which was quite nice.

Good race and good report!

"I calculated a minute less on my Garmin but it could be when I hit the clock to switch over between sports or when I hit the start button etc. Whatever."

I biked with a new bike and new computer yesterday and my computer was way off!  I showed the Chattanooga course was like 26.4 miles!  Need to figure out what my LBS did to my computer!
