Subject: soy protein v. whey protein
Does anyone know the difference?  Is one better than the other?

There is a lot of anecdotal stuff out there.  Not sure on the accredited research though.

But the gist of it is that it seems to depend on the person.  Some folks do better with one than the other.  In our household, I seem to process and feel better with whey and my wife does better with the soy.

I've heard lots of things...none of which I can confirm.  A few things I recall:

Hammer nutrition says their soy is more for "pre workout" whereas their whey is more of "post workout" kind of thing.  I think they said it's because their whey tends to cause some muscle breakdown so they rebuild or something like that.

Unless you use Hammer's Whey protein, whey tends to have lactose in it.  This is bad for those lactose intolerant types.  Yay for soy.

Whey based powders taste better to me than soy.  Soy tastes grainy.

And like the above poster said...it's personal too.  I have found VERY few protein powders that my body will accept without pitching a fit.  Whichever works better for you, mate.

Soy protein is made from soy beans, while whey is a milk by product. Whey tends to work best to most people, but I have heard of some people not being able to take it because of lactose intolerance or being a vegan.

As for which is better, no real answer to that. Like some people say, you need to try them out. Look at the ingredients as some forms of protein release faster or slower than others

I prefer whey- it mixes better and isn't "gritty" like the soy powder.  And the soy makes me gassy, whereas the whey does not.  My choice is strictly based on personal preference.

I also prefer a whey mix over soy. I've only tried one kind of soy protein mix, and it was so awful...that it pretty much turned me off to soy protein mixes altogether. I threw the whole canister right into the garbage, after just one sampling of it...cuz I knew I would never use it again...but that's just me.

I got some insight from a pharmacist friend of mine today.  He strongy encouraged use of vitamin and mineral supplements, and he's not doing it for the money because he's agreed to sell it all to me for his cost.  I'll just share some things he told me if you are interested

1.  Whey is better for men and soy is better for women.  Don't know why...did not ask.

2.  Also, recommended a good multi-vitamin.

3.  Coenzyme Q10 with Vitamin E.  Recommended this for recovery because it's somewhat of an anti-inflammatory.

4.  Potassium - this is good for tight muscles...also for quicker recovery?

6.  Fish Oil - because of the omega-3 fatty acids because it reduces tri-glycerides in the blood.

I should be learning more from him in the future.  I'll be sure to share.

Great information, thanks for sharing! Can I ask which multi he suggested?

The reason he probably said soy is better for women is because it contains estrogen (or some form of it). Technically it can lower testosterone levels, but it can screw up men or women if you eat too much of it (women need testosterone too).

Also...for those that are on thyroid medications, soy can interfere with the absorbtion of the medication - just something else to be aware of with soy products.

If you buy the research that shows that soy can act as an estrogen (I do, but I admit there are conflicting studies) then it is no better for women than it is for men with the exception of post menopausal women.
My wife get migraine headaches before or on her period with some birth control pills. The more hormonal they are, the worse her headaches. If she eats soy protein (and I am talking high quality stuff) she will get a migraine that will shut her down for a day. That tells me all I need to know.

Healthy women do not need extra estrogen any more than men do.

I do think it is fine in smaller amounts, like in hammer perpetum (which is soy and has a carb to protein ration of 7:1). They claim soy is better during, but I am not so sure. Accelorade and accel gel work so well for me and many that I wonder.

When briefly thought we might have to use soy formula to supplement our second child after my wife stopped nursing and we read everything out there on it . . . and it was scary. Especially for kids.

Like I said before, there is conflicting evidence out there and I suggest everyone make their own decisions . . . but I believe that soy is not this wonderful perfect food that it is often claimed to be. As someone will point out, there are cultures that eat a ton of soy and are healthier than us Americans (which is not hard to be). That is a solid argument the other way.
