So now that the Camp Pendleton International is done, who is in for the sprint next month? I'll be there.

I have signed up for it.  Using it as a training race between my Oly's.  I am excited to go to Cam P.  Before my uncle was killed in 'Nam, he was stationed there...at the ripe age of 18.  My parents are flying out to see the base.

I'm in, and also just using it to help me along the way to the LA tri.  I haven't been on the bike in a long while; at the end of april I got hit by a car door and cracked my frame, I did stationary rides at the gym for a month until my bike was fixed right before a race on june 8th, but after the race I sent it back to the shop to get the paint finished and just havent biked since.  I should be getting the frame back this week.  I'm not too worried about the missed training though because cycling is like riding a bike, you never forget how to do it.

I'm in for this one too. I missed the Oly last weekend due to being sick (figures it happens before a race) so I am looking forward to it.

I sooo want to do this, but I'm already heading down to San Diego the following weekend for the Stone Brew festival.  It's a 250 mile trip for me and I've been going down there a lot lately, 3 times in just the last 6 weeks, with 3 more trips planned in the next 2.5 months.  Seriously, I should just move down there.

Mysister lives down there so I go to visit her all the time, last year we went to the Stone fest with a bunch of her friends and it was really fun.

I may have to make that trip also, as my girlfriend is a big fan of food/drink festivals and I'm a big fan of Stone's beer.

I recommend buying your tickets soon, I hear they usually sell out before the event!

Just got my race packet in the mail.  Strange.  We still need to pick up a bunch of stuff at the race (ie. race cap, chip, etc...).  I have never received stuff before hand, it is nice, that way it is one less thing to worry about on race day.

Jeff...we will plan out our 1st and 2nd place finishes later.  Well, 1st and 2nd place out of the two of us!

What is the bike like?  Is it at all hilly or pretty flat?

I got my packet in the mail this week.

So how is the swim like in this tri? I am a terrible swimmer and I haven't had any water time the past month trying to heal my bum shoulder.  Not to mention this is my first OPW race. I'm super nervous. I just want to make sure I'll survive the swim portion of the race.

I just missed the RateBeer Summer Gathering there in SD (small airport comedy of errors) and Stone pulled out all the stops for us. An amazing array of Stone beers past and present. The rest of the beer weekend was also amazing.

I will be down there for Pendleton Sprint and had a few questions -- this is my first tri in over twenty years so I'm back to being a total newbie.

1. What time should I arrive?

2. Will they allow "swim socks"?

3. I have a road bike I've adapted for tri with base bar and clip ons and a Profile Design aero water bottle, are there any prohibitions against certain bars?

4. How hilly is it? What kind of gearing on your cassette are you using?

5. Does the total leg distance include the run to/from the beach and into the water? I'd like to know so I can estimate my time per leg.

6. Is there any support for bike flats?

Sorry if any of these questions are stupid! I'm actually sort of shocked myself about all that I don't know.

I've only done the Oly, but that includes almost all of the sprint course

1. What time should I arrive?

if it's anything like the Oly (probably is), then it's first come first serve int eh racks (by wave).  It may take time to get from the gate to transition as well.  Plan ahead.  they probably tell you what time to be at the gate by with your packet (they do for the oly

2. Will they allow "swim socks"?

Doubt it.  Water should be very warm

3. I have a road bike I've adapted for tri with base bar and clip ons and a Profile Design aero water bottle, are there any prohibitions against certain bars?

No.  Just have your bar ends plugged

4. How hilly is it? What kind of gearing on your cassette are you using?

It's not flat, but there are no climbs.  More like rollers.  One decent little hill going each way.  I use a 12/27 for the Oly, and I am a big guy and was in the big gear for all but two of the climbs.  Map and elevation profile for the sprint here:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3624751

You can see there's not a lot of elevation gain, and the middle "hill" on the Las Pulgas out and back is more like a gradual false flat.  SHould have a tailwind comig back

5. Does the total leg distance include the run to/from the beach and into the water? I'd like to know so I can estimate my time per leg.

Swim leg distances normally do not include T runs.

6. Is there any support for bike flats? Sorry if any of these questions are stupid! I'm actually sort of shocked myself about all that I don't know.

There wasn't for the Oly, I wouldn't expect it for the sprint.  The roads are pretty good, try to stay away from the far shoulder, as there is some debris to watch out for, including spent shell casings

For mixie - it's not in the basin, it's ocean swim, so I am sure there will be swim warm up time.

Wow, thanks a ton for your answers!

One more question:

What do I wear under the wetsuit? A speedo or my tri-suit? I'm a little concerned that wearing a wet chamois would just make my taint soft and ripe for irritation and abuse.

Wear the tri suit, it's a sprint, no time for changing. Unless you are comfortable wearing a speedo for the entire race. Then I would just worry about chafing from the bike seat on the inside of your legs, or the same place on the run.
