Subject: Lansing area OWS spot?

Any recommendations on a good open water swim spot in the Lansing area?  I have been training in our "pond" but last wkd I swam at Island Lake near Brighton and loved it!  No turning, just swim, swim, swim...  so I'm curious if there are any good places around here.  I'm near Bath.

Also -  I should probably bring my bike in for a tune-up.  Any recommendations on good bike shops in the area?

Thanks!

For open water, you can always head to Hawk Island County Park (just West of Aurelius on Cavanaugh). It's small and sometimes kind of weedy, but doable. If you get there earlier in the a.m., you can swim wherever you want. At noon, the somewhat militant lifeguard make sure you stay within the buoys.

Others swim at Lake Lansing, though I've not yet done so, and can't recommend an entry point.

Good luck! If you're ever looking for some swimming company, send me a message!

As for a bike shop I just took my bike in for a tune up to Spin Street Bikes on Turner Street in Old Town and was really happy. I got the bike back in a day and the price was very reasonable. Sorry, I wish I knew of some open water swimmin' places!

If there is an entry point on Lake Lansing that would be great for me as it's close.  I think the beach hours are noon to eight - I wonder if it would be legit to start there prior to the beach opening?  Anyone swim in Lake Lansing?  What about boat traffic?

arenkas - I'm hoping to do an OWS this wkd.  I'm a beginner working towards doing a sprint tri end of August.  But if I line something up for tomorrow or Sunday I'll send you a message just in case you're interested. : )

Hey woman. You can swim at Sleepy Hollow as well. It can get a bit crowded at times but that's real close to you!

To be honest I have never even been to Sleepy Hollow and it is only 12 miles from me! Will definitely head over there.  THanks!  :

Can you swim wherever you want at Sleepy Hollow? Or do they have lifeguards and make you stay within buoys like Hawk Island?

NO lifeguards at all. You can go where ever you want. However there are boats out there.

TRIshaP - I think we met at Hawk Island - you had your kids in the stroller I had my boys under the BT tent.

I'm trying to work back up to doing a sprint in late Aug too.  maybe we can get together for some training.

I haven't lived in Lansing since 1998, but Lake Lansing was always NASTY for OWS!!! There were a couple of gravel pits we used to swim in, but I wouldn't recommend them. Sleepy Hollow is a great place to swim (and mountain bike and run), and everytime I swam there, any boats were anchored fishing.

I parked at the beach and ran the trail around the outside of Sleepy Hollow yesterday and the beach was packed at that time.  What few times I could see the lake there didn't appear to be too many boats and it's a no wake lake if memory serves me correctly.  This park is one of my most favorite training grounds for all 3 disciplines. I rarely see many people on the trails and when I do they're usually friendly or keep to themselves.  When riding or running on the roads in the park I've never had a problem with vehicles there.  In general this place is a hidden gem that most people don't know about.  I am sure Trixie would agree.

There is a private lake called Lake Victoria in Laingsburg. I have a friend on the tri team that lives off the lake and we had a nice morning swim. There is a no wake policy on the lake before 10 A.M...so if you want a nice OWS in the morning, I would go here. Just go to a boat launch or beach and go for a quick swim. I doubt anyone will bother you seeing as how no one has bothered us everytime we have gone.
