its an ITU event, so drafting is legal, which makes it a bit like a road race. I think its being able to handle the bike, brake, and shift gears all @ once that makes the road bike a more suitable bike to use, but with aero bars for when you are going solo.

glad there is so much tri on tv this weekend.  but it's really annoying that they are covering the men's race in detail and did the entire women's race in like a 10 minute highlight reel.

ITU rules are different than USAT rules - here are the rules for the bike portion as far as the handlebars go ---

E.3.6 Handlebars

For elite and junior competitors in Triathlon World Cups, Olympic Games, ITU Regional Championships, ITU International Events, the following rule on handlebars apply: (Note: This rule will not apply to age group competitions or long distance events).

a) Only traditional drop handlebars are permitted

b) Clip-ons will be permitted provided they do not extend more than 15 cm beyond the front wheel axle, and they are not longer than the brake levers' foremost line.

c) Straight forward clip-ons must be bridged, and must not carry forward facing brake levers

d) No forward facing bar or gear shifters are allowed on the end of the clip-ons. The only exception will be grip shifters.

e) Elbow pads are permitted.

That really annoyed me too.  I don't even think they spent a whole 10 minutes on the women.

It was a fabulous race to watch live - but I think that the reason that it didn't get a lot of TV attention is because the finish for the Olympic spot wasn't really even close (I did not watch the coverage, so this is merely supposition).  We were fascinated as we watched (using stopwatches to time transitions and laps and what not), but the folks that came to see the "Battle of the Sarah's" were somewhat disappointed, I think, as it didn't play out as the showdown that it could have.

Not an excuse for it, but perhaps the reason.
