JGFTri - 2005-02-03 5:37 PM Hey Steve, just curious, did you look at the Blade or Saber? Or does Blade pretty much = Typhoon?

Yeah, Blade is the same frame (basically) as the Tiphoon.  The saber is 1 step below the Blade.  I believe it's made with the harder titanium (less forgiving) while the blade and tiphoon are a mixture of softer and harder titanium to give an excellent blend of responsiveness and comfort.

Steve, Bear, do either of you know of anyone that has had any catastrophic failures of their CF frames? Also, are CF manufacturers like cannondale (only bike I've ridden) in that they have long warranties against frame damage?

I've done a fair amount of research before plunking down the couple dollars on my new bike and I just have to say....read the warranty!  I know of only TWO bike companies that will replace a frame if damaged outside "manufacturer's defects".  What this means is that if anything happens to compromise the structural integrity of your CF frame....9 times out of 10 it's not the "manufacturer's defect" but rather a wreck that is your fault.

That being said, both Javelin and Aegis have a "no fault" replacement program that covers you if you "crash" your bike and need a new frame, but the replacement cost depends on the age of the frame and only covers the ORIGINAL owner.  The least amount you'd spend would be 65% of retail at the time of replacement, going up from there the older the bike frame gets.

The other avenue you could do is "insure" your bike on a home insurance rider (just like you'd insure your wife's diamond ring or other valuables in your home).  That way, even if the bike gets stolen....you're covered.  At least that's the way it is with Allstate.

Regarding someone who had a catastrophic occurance with CF?  Hmmmm....the most recent occurance that comes to mind is South African triathlete Conrad Stoltz in the Olympic games when his seatpost broke after his chainring misfired on an uphill causing his chain to drop and his 80kg body to land smartly on his saddle....breaking his seatpost.

It ended his race.  Now THAT'S catastrophic!

Steve,

Congrats on the new killer ride.  QR's are great bikes.  What li'l extra's have you added?

Li'l extras?   Hmmmm, not much more I could do to this bike.  It's completely tricked out.  I will transfer my profile carbon elite cranks to this bike and change out the stupid white bar tape to black and change all the cables to teflon cables...but that's about it I suppose.

I don't see any reflectors, nor am I finding one of those thumb-operated bells. You're losing style points here...

How a bout a nice titainum kickstand?

Yeah, you guys are right.  I need to start thinking outside the box.

What do you guys think about putting that orange flag that was on my green machine on my Tiphoon!  That would be hilarious to see some guy racing in a triathlon with an orange flag flapping in the wind!   LOL

Ok.

I just finished taking the new bike out (as of yet, unnamed steed) for a 1.5 hr ride.  I gotta tell you, riding the Tiphoon and riding the Tequilo is like night and day.

The Tiphoon is absolutely silent when peddling, no creaks, whirrs, chain rub, squeeks, nothing.  Additionally, the vibration damping qualities is astounding!  I know others on this site have 100% titanium bikes so you know what I mean.

This bike is like driving a Mercedes vs an Acura Integra.  Is so different than aluminum I can't really believe.  The retail description of "this bike with blow away your expectations" were absolutely true.

I can't wait to put some long rides in this saddle.  This bike is the "lay-z-boy" of bikes...it's so comfortable!  (I have changed my avitar for a tribute)

I put 7,000+ miles on an entry-level Allez, then after a century ride took a stranger's Litespeed for a short test ride. After that, it was just a matter of waiting for the price to fall as I was hooked on titanium. I thought that road buzz was an integral part of cycling, didn't know that some bikes don't have it.

The other aspect, whether a function of the metal or of design, is that you stand on the pedals and they go down. Sounds simple enough, until you ride a bike with little flex, and you realize how much energy was wasted with the give in the bottom bracket.

Hour and a half, you covered, what, 20 miles? Wait until you go on a long ride. Can you see yourself ever riding an aluminum frame again?

Can't wait to take my Ford Fiesta out for my Century next month.  I'm planning on painting a cool racing stripe on it first though.  Trust me, it won't be either of THESE colors.

Well, I still got the good ol' 1998 Cannondale R300 Triple sitting around that I'll probabaly ride every now and again....that is until I buy a Vortex to replace her... (he he he).Man, I really still can't believe that Titanium makes that much difference. Even the carbon fiber bike I road didn't feel like that. I guess it was....how did you say...the wooden feel to the CF bike that really dampened the surprise. When you ride Titanium it looks and feels like aluminum on the smooth road ... until some bumps come along and you say......"Hey what was that, it felt like a bump but I didn't really feel it....that was strange"I was honestly, completely amazed the entire 1.5 hours.I cant WAIT to go on a 5 hr ride with this puppy!
