Subject: difference road bike vs triathlon bike

Hello everybody,

I started about 2 months ago training for a triathlon. I did my first (sprint)triathlon 2 weeks ago with the road-bike of a friend and everything went really fine. By now I would like to buy my own bike for training and competing.

Can someone tell me the differences between road-bikes (ex. http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/road_bikes.htm) and triathlon bikes (ex. http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/tri_bikes.htm).

As I just started, I didn't wanne buy a really expensive bike and I was thinking about the 2008 Dawes Lightning 1500. (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/lt1500.htm). Does anyone has this bike or has some tips to give me before buying a bike?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

 Greetz,

 el_cid (from Barcelona/Spain)

Tri bikes typically have steeper seat tubes than do road bikes. This engages the quads more during cycling, which saves your hamstrings a bit for the run. Additionally, road bikes have traditional drop bars with integrated shift/brake levers, while tri bikes usually have aerobar-mounted shifters with the brake levers on the ends of pursuit-style bars. This allows you to shift while in the aero position.

Less importantly, tri bikes are designed with aerodynamics in mind (which usually adds a bit of weight. Road bikes forgo aerodynamic concerns in favor of weight saving.

A true tri bike is designed from the aero-bars back (and down), meaning that the aerodynamic position (low in front) requires a steeper seat tube angle in order to preserve a hip angle that allows power transfer. The wheels will be (or at least should be) farther forward relative to the pedals to maintain proper weight balance front-to-back, which is vital to stable handling.

Boy, I bet Tom Demerly wishes he could get paid a nickel for every time that link is posted here    Shouldn't someone make it a sticky, or something, like under an equipment FAQ?

It's a well-written, concise, nearly complete answer to a oft-recurring question, saves a whole lot of typing. Rarely will someone post something in an original answer that isn't contained in Demerly's essay.

Management here doesn't believe in stickies/FAQs.

 Hi again,

Thank you very much for your clear answer. To summarize we could say it like this:

- more aerodynamic, but a bit heavier than a road bike.

- spares some muscles you will need for running.

 Thanks!
