Subject: How and can you prevent blisters on the bottom of your toes?

I'm training for a marathon and did my 10 mile run today.

For the first time, I've developed a rather large blister on the side/bottom of my little toe on my right foot. It hurts and I'm hoping that it will dry/resolve before my runs starting on Monday again.

Here's the question: can you prevent this and how do you do it? I've never developed blisters like this before.

My shoes are fairly new....less than 150 miles on it, I wear socks from SockGuy. Shoe fits me. I do sweat a lot....is this the problem? I tend to pronate. We run on a lot of rolling hills during the long run.

Thanks for any help.

Well to get rid of the blister firstof all.....pop it bt don't unroof it.  J&J make nice blister bandaids that you can leave on for days.   Other option is antibiotic ointment and athletic tape.  This works really well but is a bit messy.  TRya nother kind of sock is the first hing I would do....Try wright sokcs...they are double layer and slide on themselves.  Duct tape on your toe is another option

Good advice from Sue as always on how to deal with the blister you've got ...

To prevent blisters, try lubing generously with BodyGlide or (my favorite) SportShield roll-on.

SockGuy makes good moisture-wicking socks, but it wouldn't hurt to try another couple of brands, either ... it really depends on the individual. You could try Wigwam, Wright, Balaga, Asics ... to mention a few. There are many.

Have you tried using BodyGlide, Sportshield, or Blisterblock on your feet? I use it on my toes to prevent rubbing and friction...seems to help.

Would you recommend popping the blister? I have 4 runs scheduled this week and then a 12 mile long run on Saturday....I'm not sure if I should pop it today and run on it tomorrow or just run on it and see what happens?

I've never thought of Bodyglide on the bottom of my feet before....so it actually works? I read somewhere to put powder to dry out feet in the socks....but I'm hearing here that I should try Bodyglide instead, correct?

I'm going to try and see if I can find different socks....but I'm limited in where I can shop (small city). My shoes are okay I think. I wear wides in New Balance and the shoes have felt great.

Thanks!!

The above advice is great for how not to get one but now that you have one, what I've done many a time and it seems to work well is take neosporin with lidocain, slit the edge of the blister and drain it then fill it with one layer of neosporin underneath the top skin layer. THEN put a multi-day bandaid on it.

That's worked for me for years for runs.

Also, for your training runs while you recover - I have had great success with Band-Aid's blister type product. It is expensive, but it is super thick and rubbery (protective) and it will stay on during runs. I'll carry one with me when I do long runs in humid weather - been a good thing to have in a pinch.

You can also superglue things closed on your skin, but I don't think you'll need to go that route.

Socks are critical - you have to play around with them to find what works for you.

The reality, though, is if this was your longest run to date, then you're just developing the toughness on your feet you'll need. It's part of the gig.

Take care!

I swear by INJINJI socks, a favourite amongst ultra runners. It has individual toes, just like gloves and it holds well against the feet. It also prevents the toes from rubbing against each other. They are great!

I have a pair of Injinji socks. I was really hoping for a miracle with them...unfortunately, they didn't work well for me. I require a lot of cushioning in my running socks...the Injinji socks are just a tad bit light on the cushioning for me, and that's probably why they didn't help my particular problem. My toes still went numb...quicker, infact with the Injinji socks than when I wear my old standby Thorlo's. They DO keep the toes from rubbing, but they're just too thin of a sock for me.
